Default XC90 d5 fuel consumption

Out of interest what fuel consumption are others getting?

I’ve had my 2010 XC90 d5 a couple of months now and I drive steady, the computer is showing 29.3 average.

I had a 2010 D5 auto for 7 years and kept a reasonably close eye on fuel consumption.
Short journeys of 3-4 miles gave about 26 - 27 mpg, normal day to day mix of 4 miles to work during the week followed by longer trips of 50 or 60 miles at the weekend would give an average of 30 mpg and good long motorway or main road journeys could achieve over 40 mpg; I once saw 46 mpg on a long gentle overnight run down through France, but that was exceptional.
I noticed a difference of at least 10% between winter and summer figures and running the tyres on 39 psi (eco setting) would increase the mpg by about 5%.
The optimum speed for economy, if that’s the right word when talking about an XC90, was 60-65 mph; below that and the torque converter was slipping and above 70 mpg, consumption rose significantly.
When I first bought the car, and realised how much more it was going to cost to run than my previous XC70, I wondered if I had done the right thing but quickly started to appreciate the sheer versatility and comfort that the car offered, that I started to ignore the fuel bills. In truth, the difference in cost of running the XC90 over that of running the XC70 would only have been £250 -300 per year; about 60p per day, not enough to worry about.

The computers on these are usually optimistic by 2 or 3 mpg.... but some are not, it is possible to re-calibrate them. The only real way to tell is to brim to brim the tank and calculate it. A few people on here use the Fuelly app on their phones.

Had my 2006 D5 auto 185 bhp for 7 years, now got 153k and the economy has steadily got better over the years.
Normal running about, (I live rural), 33mpg.
Long motorway journeys 37/38 mpg, (Got 39.8mpg on one but could not crack 40).

Motorway speed makes a huge difference, cruise control on at 70mph on the dot and get good economy, move to 75mph and it drops dramatically, probably because it is brick shaped and you can keep a much more even speed at 70.
Has anyone else noticed that at 70 in an XC90 you actually pass most cars? I have checked mine on the measured mile and the speedo is very accurate.

Figures are from the trip computer so may be a bit optomistic.

2010 D5.

Live in rural france so a little bit hilly use it daily to take the dog for a walk (3 miles round trip) removed third row of seats ages ago. Keep it at 1/2 a tank am very light footed and use cruise control everywhere!!!.

Went to Royan yesterday 300 mile round trip got 32. Thats mostly cross country with 30kph zones in villages, about 35 miles of dual carriageway at 70 the rest at 32 - 53mph with 3 people on board.

But around home as mentioned above still get 31.6 which oddly is better than I used to get driving around Rotherham... 27ish ? road surfaces? external temperature? its still 17 degrees here.
