In the original post, you will note, "Surprised and Curious". I can assure you, that the date, is correct. Have to admit, what with recent, travels, etc, I forgot about this - but now have the answer. Just been and tried this, three times and the bonnet closes, every time the engine is started. With the bonnet, just resting and not part engaged, into the latches, the starting of the engine, seems to give enough vibration, for the bonnet to close, under its own weight. Just recently, had a 36000 mile, service carried out and I note that the latches, have been lubricated. Mystery, solved. tem. Last edited by tem; Oct 23rd, 2010 at 16:54. Reason: text |

Was it just the vibration of the starter motor that caused the bonnet to close ?
I can't imagine the bonnet tries to auto-close - it must be necessary to run the engine with the bonnet open during maintenance and servicing. I think the mechanics would object when they eventually freed themselves from under an auto-closing bonnet..!

re:bonnet open
Hi, I have a 2007 s80 2.4d. I opened my bonnet to add some top up oil and after closing, the "bonnet open" symbol was displayed.
I reopened and closed the bonnet several times and was surely locked tight , yet still the message appeared that the bonnet was open. I sprayed some 3 in 1 oil with silicone into the both mechanisms and drove the car , after a few minutes the open bonnet symbol went off , then back on and off and finaly has gone off. I am reluctant to reopen the bonnet now , as the car alarm will activate if i cannot lock the bonnet properly. |

you really need a new bonnet catch for the right side ( Incorporating the switch ) to cure this ...

I have a 2011 S60 D3 and it looks like I may have to replace the bonnet catch on the driver side as it is not locking in place when pushed down into the closed position (replicated closing the bonnet using a screwdriver in the catch) and it wouldn't stay shut...the passenger side one is fine!
I have the replacement catch but no idea how to remove the old one as can't figure out a way to get into it. Any tips? Thanks |
