An alternative.

Looks like the prodrive track really only caters for large corporates. This place nr newmarket/ cambridge seems more appropriate for a more informal off-road day. just £30 for the full day (i'm sure a couple of hours would suffice).... and they'll tow you out if you get stuck, apparently.

http://www.wildtracksltd.co.uk/off-road-4x4

If you click on the map on the site, you'll see there are about 5 4x4 courses of varying difficulty (woodland trail looks pleasant).

Here's a view of it from the air:

If this is the same as the local 4x4 clubs use then there is no way that I would consider putting a £35k car through it - unless it belonged to someone else!!

When the local 4x4 clubs do this many of them baulk at taking their 10 years old RangeRovers and Discoveries out on thge circuits. I know what it is like as I go periodically and drive with them - and XC60s (even with winter tyres ) would struggle to make it much past the start line.

My view is that this sort of day out would be good fun, for about 10 mins - or until the first XC60 was pulled out with damaged transmission and body panels - whichver comes first.

'fraid that I would not be joining anyone on this.

just putting ideas out there Iain. like XC60AWD suggests an alternative might simply be a jaunt in the countryside, and perhaps people could then discuss if they wanted to do something like this. if you have any other ideas for a meet, please post them.

as far as this track goes, i think you're right for some of the more challenging tracks. there are 6 tracks, however, and 1 of them might be suitable for a bunch of soft roader drivers - with or without winter tyres. ideally, i'd do a reccy at some point. i've a mate who lives in newmarket, so have an excuse to go that way sometime.

Trust you to bring us all down to earth with a dose of reality Iain! That said, I agree. Pub works for me, but the real question is where.

Surely amongst the geeks and nerds (like me) who frequent this forum, we have a mathematical genius who can calculate the location which minimises the aggregate journey taken by all those attending. I've had a first attempt, and bizarrely, it's still Horsham. Imagine my surprise......

i don't claim to be a full time geek, although i confess to having geek tendencies now and again! . since we have members from both the south and scotland interested, i would say somewhere nr yorkshire - somewhere nr the a1(m) maybe?

that said, covering the whole of the uk might be a bit of an ask and we may be better off doing separate north and south meets. depends how far people are willing to travel. personally i'd like the excuse to drive a decent distance.

What about meeting at a pre-booked go-kart track? That way people would get to meet up and satisfy their boy(or girl)-racer aspirations as well.

You'll try, but I bet you don't succeed!!
Seriously though I couldn't really disagree with your point. Certainly don't want to take my pride-and-joy through some mountainous bog or across some boneshaking terrain !!
