Reading the small print, they reserve the right to use second hand parts to fix your car and the key part for me:
"Limited liability Under this warranty, Kia are only liable for the repair or replacement of original parts by an authorised Kia dealer that are defective in material or workmanship. Kia are not liable for any costs that may incur getting to a dealer, supplying a replacement car or as a result of being without the car during warranty repairs." So the ancillary belt fails taking the cam belt and head with it one Monday morning, you have to pay Kia to uplift your car to the garage and sort yourself out with alternative transport while they fit a secondhand engine which is no longer covered by the warranty as it is no longer an original part. I suppose you're not £5k+ out of pocket though.

Kia and Hyundai have been clients of ours for 4 years in the GCC. Without a doubt their build quality is high and they are reliable engines using the latest lean burn technology. Volvo have never managed to establish them selves out here where the prestige car market is very high and LRs reputation has dropped severely as reliability is poor in the hot climate despite LR having their hot climate R&D proving ground in Dubai.
What I have noted with Kia and Hyundai (same platforms and diagnostic equipment and same central shared server for software updates and programming) is the have very few TSBs a confident sign that they are getting it right in the design stages hence why they can offer a 7 year warranty. My wife has an 8 year old Tucson v6 4x4 only thing I have done is routine servicing including timing belt and its still on the original battery which is good for the hot climatic conditions, its' also sound in the desert (tiers dropped to 15 psi) Also the Asian Common Rail Diesel system reliability stats are very good HP pump is proving to have a long life due to a different design using a swash plate on bearings pushing three pistons forward as apposed to the radial arrangement. In short they are producing a good quality motor and their long reliability means they are a good nearly new and second hand buy. Take a look in the Hyundai UK forum, they don't seem to be reporting any issues. |

KBB, the UK market is still very badge orientated which is why great cars such as VW Phaeton never get a look in because they don't have the right badge.
It does however leave some fantastic bargains for those prepared to be a bit different. If you buy a car and run it until the wheels fall off depreciation is irrelevant. You'll probably swap through boredom rather than necessity. You don't get to be the third largest manufacturer of anything in this world if the product is not right.

I know a number of people that own a Kia and never had any issues. They would not change for anything else because of that.

Interesting that Kia and Hyundai are now all the talk. I am a fan of both, although of recent they are now not the bargain they once where, and I would imagine they are now trying to apeal to a different type of customer.
Getting a discount on a Kia or Hyundai is not as easy as it used to be, and I was unable to get much of a discount or rather not enough of a discount when enquiring about the new Sante Fe, which as good as it is, I don't think it is knocking £40k good. It is 'more' of a car than an XC60, although really the comparision of a Sante Fe/Sorrento should more so be against the likes of XC90, which then makes the Kia and Hyundai look good value I suppose. Thing is, many will prefer to spend that little (read quite a lot) extra on the XC90. I think I would. Regards |

Whilst looking at other models before I bought my Volvo, I looked at Hyundai IX35 and was given the price list and told to deduct £2k off once I had chosen the car I wanted. The Hyundai and Kia didn't look in the same class as Volvo to me, but there are loads of them on the roads round this way. Having said that since getting my XC60 there seems to be loads of them now as well.

Have they stopped fitting those hideous black radio antenna that should have been consigned to the 90s long ago?

Is it me, or does it look a lot like an XC60? Looks good on paper. Round here though the XC90 is king, no contest. Supermarket car parks look like main dealers sometimes.

Just you
I had a Sorento as a loan car during one of my Skoda's holidays at the dealer. Until then, I'd always though "ugh, SUV" and "er, Kia", but it did sway me a little on both counts. Nowhere near as well finished or resolved as the Volvo, but certainly better than I'd assumed. Not XC60 price good though....
