Volvo winter wheel packages
Hi all,
My dealer recently mentioned that Volvo do winter wheel and tyre packages. This is my first winter with the car so I was wondering if this in fact the case and if so when and where to expect these deals? Thanks for any help, Dan |

Indeed they do. Here is an extract from the brochure from a couple of years ago - they will have a newer one and you can peruse it and choose which wheel package you want.
Volvo prices on the new offering will be top dollar right now. Far better to get your timing right and buy stock that the dealers need to shift at the end of winter through to mid-summer. That's what we did and we bought the package at a reduced price via TMS Volvo in the Midlands. Spotted their listing on eBay! Alternatively you can buy packages either from online tyre suppliers (Mytyres.com) or from another forum member who want to sell their existing winter wheel & tyre package because they're changing car (as I am!). These latter two options will be much cheaper than the Volvo dealer. The tyre suppliers won't be supplying original Volvo wheels though. The forum members probably will be trying to sell their original Volvo wheels but you need to ensure that the wheels are perfect in condition and there's plenty of life left in the tyre tread depth. Hope this helps. Arianne

Winter tyres are definitely a good investment, even if you have AWD, and especially if you live in a rural area.
The Volvo packages are expensive but they include appropriate Volvo wheels for your car. You could alternatively just buy the tyres on discount websites such as Oponeo and store your unused tyres in the garden shed, loft etc. If you have nowhere to store them, KwikFit do a "tyre hotel" service for £40 but they will only fit tyres that they have supplied Most independent tyre outfits will swap tyres for around £10-£15 a wheel.

Thanks for the replies. The dealership suggested that these packages were reasonably priced but looking at those prices I think otherwise!
Second hand off the classifieds or ebay seems the way to go then, just a case of finding the right deal. Thanks, Dan |

You should find some wheels on e-bay but to be honest they are usually not that cheap - genuine wheels for current models are hard to come by.
I would suggest buy new tyres every time. I've bought second hand tyres on a few occasions (many years ago) and regretted it every time. They are rarely good value in any case - given the amount of usable tread remaining when you convert that to a percentage of the tyre life, the part worn tyres are often more expensive than new, especially when you factor in the fitting cost.

It will be cheaper to 'dump' your summer tyres and buy four all-season tyres. I did this last November and replaced Pirelli Scorpion Verde with Nokian Weatherproof. Total cost just under £460 including fitting. 29k later (today) the fronts are now in need of replacing. That's quite impressive. For me, this provides a perfect solution to have one tyre for all seasons.

I also currently swap my wheels/tyres for winters and I think this is still the best ultimate performance option, but there are new all season/4 season tyres coming onto the market now which are really very good and I think i'll decide to go this route when my current tyres are worn out.
all season tyres used to be poor in the summer and the winter but the latest tyres are really very good at everything, unless doing extremes like track racing. If going down the dedicated winter tyre route and If you plan on keeping your car for a few years it makes sense to buy some wheels for the winter tyres. (obviously need space to store them!) Saves £120 (£15 per wheel x4 x2) a year in fitting costs and you can just swap them over on your drive. Tom. |

I,m sure I have read (in a few places) that people now use "winter tyres" all year round. If I recall correctly they seem to be fine in all weathers. Who wants to swap tyres or wheels every 6 months or so when the "winters" are perfectly fine. I could be wrong of course as I am no expert on the subject.

Usually sell the summers, as soon as I put the winters on. Picking up a V90 tomorrow and by the middle of next week, I should have a set of Nokian WR A4's fitted. tem.
