Dealers are normally pretty competitive on Battery prices & what's more the batteries are correct for the car (Size, Shape & output) & tend to last an awful lot longer than those purchased elsewhere.

I know on all of our Volvo's where I've had to swap a battery the dealer was in many cases cheapest.

Not sure that this necessarily indicates that a new battery is required. But if you do get a new one make sure you get the correct type... EFB for a manual or AGM if you have an auto.

Dealer is quoting £85 + Vat for a new one (not sure if that includes fitting). Apparently my car has the small auxillary battery and therefore doesn't use an AGM type main battery. I believe (from a previous post by Clan) that the start stop will not work if the main battery is <80%.

Will this also impact on the charging of the small battery?

Start stop hasn't worked for a very very long time.

According to my owner's manual, the presence of a support battery does not imply the battery type (as said, it's the transmission type that decides). However neither type uses an 'ordinary' battery and the vehicle charging system will have been installed for a specific battery technology.

The small battery is not critical, if it failed then you could still start the car.

My stop/start hardly ever works, I believe this is because I tend to leave the car parked up for several days on end in between lengthy journeys... if I do use the car the day after a lengthy journey then the stop/start does usually work. But even when I left it for 10 days it still started up fine.

Very true even here in Cross Country.

My Volvo-brand high quality big fat 95Ah battery for my D5 lump was cheaper at the dealer than a Supermarket Bosch battery of the same size.

Checked my receipt and £115 was the full price.
£80 for battery and £35 fitting (including not coding it )
