I'm wondering if a low battery may cause any issues with the functions of the cars electronic systems due to the alternator having to try and charge a nearly discharged battery?

Example being the intermittent steering issues I have noticed.

I'll soon know when I get a new battery.

Doubt it, as the alternator would hold up the voltage as soon as the engine is running, even if the battery was charging but you could rule the battery out by charging it overnight. Your low battery charge causing the stop/start to be inactive sounds exactly the same as mine and I don't (currently) have other electrical issues... my steering is fine.

Thanks Zebster.

I'll maybe have a go at giving it a charge.

I just recall finding a post on a different Volvo forum where someone had steering issues and a replacement battery apparently solved it.

I suppose it will at least rule it out.

On most Volvo's up to 2015 low system voltage usually first manifests with "ANTI SKID SERVICE REQUIRED" message, if the voltage drops more then models with electric power steering (V50,S40,C30,C70) get that message next...

Agree totally with this statement My S60 used to pop up that message if the battery was a bit low

Just want to get ideas of cost etc..

Thanks.
I had my battery replaced by Sturgess (now TMS) Volvo in Leicester this May. I had 'shopped-around' and was surprised that the Volvo dealership was one of the best quotes. They charged £202.20 inc VAT and the price included the 'adaptations' to system & software. The price included the (usual) free car wash and a loan V40 for the morning.
The battery was £122.50, the labour and adaptations etc £46.00, the rest was VAT. For me the thing was no hassle, everything working OK etc.

I imagine your car is an automatic with the more expensive battery?

According to my owner's manual, the manual transmission uses an EFB type (as indeed mine does have) while the auto trans uses an AGM type.
