My V70 MY2010 2.4D has developed a problem where initially after starting the engine it is slow to accelerate / lacks power. Putting my foot to the floor illicits no real response, just very slow acceleration. After a few minutes of driving the car/engine starts to behave normally and accelerates as expected. There is no engine light and no fault codes recorded.

Does anyone have some suggestions as to where to start looking?

Kind regards,

Richard.

Twin Turbo? I don't think so, the car isn't the D5 model, it is the 2.4D which I think is the same engine but with only 1 turbo.

Most diesels do not appreciate moving/being revved when cold. Generally the large the engine the more sluggish they are when cold. Sometimes there is a map on the ECU for maintaining lower fueling/performance until oil + coolant reach a more favorable temperature before allowing more performance to avoid damage.

Or has this just developed suddenly?
It could have generated fault codes but not lit the engine light, generally (not sure on this model) that only pops up when something more threatening occurs.

Brickman, no this has only just started happening. I've checked the codes using a reader and there are none be they permanent or pending. Regards, Richard.

My D5 started to do this last weekend on a trip down the M4 - could hardly manage 60 & would drop as we went up hills. (2009, 2.4 D5 R-design)
Upon pulling over, the car would rev freely when in park, but couldn't provide any power when driving.

A few mile later I had an engine warning light & engine service message.
The odb code reader suggests its the MAF sensor.

The car has been intermittent for the last week, but is booked in to an indie tomorrow for them to investigate.

I'm hoping for a fix tomorrow as it's hard to drive not knowing if you've any power or not!

Will provide feedback tomorrow on the outcome.

My car although a xc60 2010 model has the 2.4d engine and I have the similar problem as yourself, mainly when going up an incline but this isnt very often. I have seen other owners with this problem on the xc60 section and they have put the problem down to the temperature sensors on the exhaust/dpf.

I had a similar problem and I was told to use an additive to clean the injectors, Egr valve etc....I did a little research and settled on Miller Oils diesel additive, (Under £10 on E bay), It seems I should have been using a cleaner every 3rd or 4th fill?. I double dosed the tank and after using about half a tank it was cleared. I now add a single dose every third fill.

Big Ted, wilbydoughboy, Steve Molloy,

Many thanks for your suggestions. With no fault codes I’m wondering whether I should wait until I get a hard fault as I could spend a lot of time and money chasing faults that aren’t there.

Big Ted, I’d be really interested in an update to your MAF fault.

willydoughboy, would these temp sensor problems not drive fault codes. My problem is only happening very soon after engine start and disappears after a few minutes.

Steve, I already add a cleaning additive, from Halfords, on a regular basis.

Regards,

Richard.

If you enter in the search of this site: XC60 lack of response to accelerator, there is plenty of info. My car will have to be looked at but like you I am unsure if there is anything logged. I would really like the problem to become permanent so I can show the problem to the garage whilst it is happening.
