Had it serviced at Voltech recently and they suggested I got Aux belts changed

I went and spoke with Volvo main dealer yesterday who confirmed that it is 10 years or 108k miles (whatever comes 1st) for the timing belt.

I also asked about the auxiliary belts and tensioner and was told they are also 10 years which get done same time as the timing belt.

My Aux belts were changed by main dealer ( Taggarts ) at 3 years. I thought it was three years or 54,000 for Aux

No, it's 5 years or 54,000 miles for the aux belt.

Interesting. Double checked my paperwork and Aux belt was replaced in part of service in 2015 at which point my car had covered 19k. I can only assume they took it as a 54k 3 year service. It didn't seem to affect the price that much so at least its been done

As Tatsfield said, its five years or 54,000 miles for the aux belt.

The aux belt tensioner is a common part that fails & have done prematurely. On the 108,000 mile/10 year service, the timing belt, aux belt & tensioner are replaced. There's no harm in replacing the tensioner before then though. Its a £60 part plus fitting, or an easy enough DIY job.

Its certainly much cheaper than an engine rebuild if it fails. Preventative maintenance as they say...

Due to experience I fully agree with the above post. Had my D5 since just over 2 years old and 59k miles, I have always followed service schedule and also changed Aux belt and tensioner every 54000 miles. Now on 454,000 but a few months ago after travelling from Bristol to Glasgow and back the aux belt snapped as I returned to Bristol, belt and tensioner were a few hundred miles short of 54k and were due to be changed the following week. Car seemed ok but after having them replaced and another couple of weeks I lost power on the M4 which turned out to be part of the snapped Aux belt had lodged in under the cambelt and caused it to slip. Cost me around £2000 to replace cylinder head and labour. For about month before I had been getting chirping noise on cold starts so my advice is definitely get Tensioner replaced as well as belt, especially if any noise.

The belt failing just a week before it was due to be replaced is bad luck. Very exasperating, to put it mildly.
But whoever replaced the belt and tensioner should have thoroughly checked the cam belt as it is well documented on here that a shredded aux. belt is likely to have caused cam belt damage. I sympathise with you though. I think that I would have had the cam belt replaced as well but it is easy to be wise after the event.

As per the Volvo service sheet, the aux belt is actually 10 years/54k miles.

But given the many, many horror stories of folk whose pistons have gone through the valves, 5 years irrespective of mileage is probably wise

Which service sheet? That doesn’t sound right to me.
