Arrow S40 2012 D2 R-Design

Hi, I'm new here and due to become a part of "Team Volvo" in a few days time when I pick up my S40 2012 D2 with 28k on the clock. Firstly I'd like to say that the wealth of knowledge I've gained over the last few days in this forum is invaluable and has certainly made me look forward to the new car.

There's just a few minor points of advice about the car I'm sure a few of you could help me out with.

1. Are there any known problems as of yet with the D4162T engine? I read in some places the DPF is recommended to be changed at 75k miles whereas in other places a change apparently isn't required at all in the service schedule.

2. After upgrading from a 2012 VW Polo 1.2tdi which frankly ran on air and a dash of diesel, what are the rough economy figures for this car and engine mainly cruising at 70mph on the motorway? I read through the HonestJohn Real MPG that it has a real average of 46.9 mpg, it just seems quite laughable for a newish 1.6L diesel given the Polo could manage 60+ mpg on a 200 mile run.

3. Would there be a main benefit to remapping the ECU- on paper improved bhp, economy and torque all seem well and good which brought me to it in the first place. Have any of you had a remap or chip fitted and what differences of figures in overall performance have you noticed?

4. Is motorway or rolling road noise really a big of a problem as many reviews have claimed?

5. Any other points of interest I could be made aware of would be greatly appreciated.

I apologise for the length of this (and my first post) but I'd like to know what all of your thoughts are and thanks for reading (here's a picture of the soon to be set of wheels).

It was the earlier 1.6 d engine that had a dpf that ran off an additive tank. The later D2 doesn't, so does not need replacing come 75000 miles.

About par for the course. ALL mpg figures quoted by Volvo appear wildly optimistic.

Dpf is maintainance free in the 8v 1.6

My 2.0D gets nearly 60mpg on my commute, 42 round the doors, the 1.6 isn't much cop for fuel efficiency even the DRIVe so be realistic

All a remap would do is invalidate any warranty on the car, some report great gains, others don't. Do through research into a well established mapper with a track record of happy customers with these engines.

My car is a bit noisy at 70 but it's nothing too concerning

Other than that I love mine, hope yours is just as good for you

Thanks VolvoRocks for clearing up the DPF issue, I know the 75k mark was a while away but still wanted to know what laid ahead. Big shame about the mpg figures though, I knew getting close to the lab conditioned gained figure with any car is high on impossible, but an apparent 71% down from the claimed mpg is hard to swallow.

Thanks Sean94, I've seen a few- most notably MTE by Kalmar Union and Celtic Tuning, but if it provides even near the claimed increase of 34bhp its worth a look. Just wondered if anyone who had a remap or chip fitted saw this sort of improvement?

Hi. I have the D4162T engine in my 2011 V50. It's the 8v SOHC & has a non Eolys DPF, so no additive every 30k & DPF is until it expires rather than having to replace it at 70k!
What is important is Volvo brought forward the timing belt interval from 150k miles to 87.5k miles; I previously wrote my experiences on this here if you fancy a worthwhile read:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=211512
More recently, I had the mis-fortune of the Clutch concentric slave cylinder (release bearing) failing; but had a cat landing as this was replaced under a Volvo policy action bulletin due to high failures I guess? Info here:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=223335
If you read my threads above; it's just bad timing / luck!
Other than the above; it's a cracking motor! Keep it maintained & always run it on quality oil! 124k miles & otherwise not missed a beat! Economy wise I get 52mpg on a 50/50 motorway / urban cycle. On straight motorway I get 60mpg+ if you cruise at 73mph!
Good luck & welcome aboard :-)

P.s. I personally wouldn't entertain re-mapping; it's already a highly tuned engine & turbo pretty much already tweaked close to max boost & 270nm torque, which for a 1.6 is pretty good! Regards road noise etc, I've recently reviewed tyres & GoodYear Efficient Grip Performance are all round top of the pile for noise & economy. Furthermore, your V40 is lighter than the v50, so expect at least +5mpg more than what I've stated in previous post. If you're a bit of a fuel economy geek; here's a link to my stats as an example: http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/658754.html
P.s. Registration is free, & so are the mobile apps! Plus you get "real world" MPG
Happy days :-)

I also have a s40 2.0d and i must admit the mpg figures are optimistic i done a 4 hour drive to scotland 70mph in 6th gear all the way and i averaged 4.2 odd in small journeys it goes down to like 41.1 seen people with really good mpg readings on here mine just wont reach them haha

Sorry to bump an old thread however I thought I'd give a quick update to let you guys know how the last 10 months have been with my motor. So without further delay I'll get straight to it in direct response to my original post.

1. Correct the D2 DPF does not need replacing.

2. Having tracked every fill up through an app (I do in fact realise how tedious this sounds but it takes roughly 10/20 seconds after filling up). So here's the stats gained from it.
Total spent £1'086.49 on diesel
Total distance 12'486.49 miles covered
Average MPG 61.181
Min MPG 49.808
Max MPG 69.019
10 months and 2 days
I drive mostly motorway at the limit or just above it, but to say I expected 46.9 MPG before picking it up I really can't argue at all especially given in them 10 months I spent over 2 out of the country.

3. Still haven't found any concrete evidence of any benefits without long term damage of remapping the ECU so for now this idea is well and truly shelved.

4. Motorway noise for me is absolutely none existing past normal levels.

5. Any further comments? Well I'm looking to change the headlights to Xenons since it's a slight annoyance being in a friends BMW and seeing the whole road visible in white light and not standard yellow. So if anyone has any advice about how to go about changing them and a rough cost that would be greatly appreciative.

Other than that it's been a flawless and a pleasure to drive and I look forward to spending a lot more time with/in it. Honestly can not look past switching from a Volvo, I did look at a T5/D4 but just couldn't justify the added outlay in insurance and fuel costs.

Yeh personally the remaps on diesels I have had have all been good and have always increased the mpg ... the only problem is with more power I usually drove it harder so I got less mpg. I actually switched from S40 2.0D Remapped to an S40 T5 now remapped as well both engines have had a better mpg since being remapped.

Shouldnt cause any long term damage unless you start redlining all over the place
