Default 1.6 d2 coolant problems

I have the 1.6 d2 2013 v40
I was having loads of problems with circulation. Everyone was saying doesnt seem like the head. I did the thermostat and problems seemed to go away but not for long. Then got told water pump did that and stil had problems so changed radiator and still same.
Some times i could get hot air through heater and circulation was fine then all of a sudden would change.
Mine turned out to be a small crack in the head gasket

Smile Volvo v40 D2 (Nov 2013) exact same issue

Hi, I am currently having the same issue as both of you have had. My car is 2013 1.6 engine v40 d2.
First of all I started with loss of heat in car, leading to engine overheating warning light, engine coolant pressured and risen to top of tank. Had it in garage, could not see any obvious issues with water pumps, head gasket etc so had it vacuumed and went on my way. All fine for few days, then same again. Pipe was air locked. Had this sorted, went on my way, happened again. Had thermostat replaced.
Now I’m having the opposite issue which is that I’ve had to top up my coolant 3 times in last couple of weeks.
Can either of you advise on what ultimately happened with your v40s? I have been advised to take to Volvo which I can not afford. Any advice or info very much appreciated!
Thanks

Another one for the list. 2015 v40 booked in for Monday morning. 32k and the coolant is dropping in the bottle until the cap is released. It's had a rad thermostat and water pump last month to no avail.

On speaking to a head ford mechanic it's been known to him that it's actually just the head gasket fails on this engine. I'm booked for labour to replace the gasket on this one for Wednesday. Ford man recons 8 hours. Time will tell

I'm having similar issues with my V40 1.6 D2 R design 2014 reg. Its just done 62K. My issues strated about a month ago with low coolant warning signs coming up. Coolant was very low. I took the car to my local garage and he thought it was an airlock. It was ok up to 15 miles and same thing happened. I took it back to my garage who checked the thermostat and it wasn't working properly so they changed it. All was ok for a few days until It happened again! I went back to the garage and they had my car for 2 days, checked the water pump and coolant had been leaking where the water pump is. They changed it and the timing belt at the same time. They took the car to a specialist to have the head gasket tested and all is ok from all the tests. It was running like a dream no issues then nearly 2 weeks later, high engine temperature reduce speed message came up, so I slowed down and temperature went back to normal. I put my heaters on and only one side was working. The car is in the garage as we speak. They are testing the radiator, as it was empty and coolant wasn't flowing into it. Its like its blocked. I have kept on to my mechanic if its the head gasket and he is adamant it's not as all the tests came back clear. I'm at my wits end. I've only had the car 18 months and I'm still paying for it. Sadly no warranty though. Surely this shouldn't be happening on such a young car and low mileage. I'll never have another volvo this has put me right off. I have spent a fortune so far.

Sounds like classic head gasket to me. And it's not a Volvo engine in your Volvo - it's a Peugeot/Citroen one. But it's used all over with the same problems - including in Mini's.

I don't understand why Volvo didn't fit temperature gauges on dashboards as standard since about 2007. It's a reckless omission, and many an engine will have been ruined because of a lack of warning signs.

Default Volvo V40 same issue D2

Hi I am from France and I have same issue as you on my Volvo V40 D2 Eco.
In French forums I don't read that much about V40s but I remember you have more Volvos in UK than us... So just a look on Google and I found your stories !

Quick story for mine :
Volvo V40 D2 1,6 110 000K (more than you...) Eco (No temperature reading)
- V40 alarm : coolant low
- Stop
- Open coolant : coolant is boiling
- Go Volvo saying : I think I have problem with head gasket
- Volvo answer : No
- Riding : problem again
- Go Volvo : I think I have problem with head gasket
- Volvo answer : No
- Riding again : problem again
- Go Volvo : I think I have problem with head gasket
- Volvo answer : No
- Me : Ok, so please try to check if you find some water in the oil
- Volvo : Hi sir, we found some water in your oil, you have problem with head gasket. Plus, your cylinder is cracked.

Is that a known pb in UK ?
Did any of you tried to get some financement from Volvo to get reparations ?

Thx for ur answers

(btw Sorry if I did not introduce myself in the forum, I assume this has to be done but I don't where)

If concerned with D2 engine just install Car Scanner Elm OBD2.
App will read error codes and display over 70 parameters of Volvo D2 engine: DPF soot, DPF pressure, coolant temp, engine oil temp, AT temp, EGR error, MAP, MAF, turbo boost, fuel injector corrections, battery state of charge, charging current, etc.
(choose Volvo D2 in "Settings - Connection - Choose connection profile")

Default Same issue

I have a 2013 v40 D2 R design, and a similar thing happened to me yesterday, I drove a short distance and noticed the heater in the car was only blowing out cool air, then I got the warning of engine overheating and to safely stop. The radiator fan carried on going and the engine seemed to cool down quite quickly, I continued driving and this happened a further two times over a short distance.
Any ideas??
Thank you.

I’ve had similar to this. First garage said coolant isn’t contaminated though and advised taking to someone who has more knowledge of Volvo. That garage has said suspected cracked cylinder, best to take it to Volvo. just dropped it at Volvo. They are sceptical it’s a cracked cylinder!!

We’ll see, I have contacted Volvo, waiting to speak with the National Sales Company. See what they say. Fob off coming my way.
