Default bolt size for the engine lifting bracket

Hi all

Can anyone tell me what the bolt size is for the engine lifting point at the rear of the engine, its bigger than anything i have. picture for reference.

The two big threaded holes in the side were used by the factory during transformation of block casting into an engine...it is not there for lifting although I suppose it could be used for that, but it would not be a level lift side-to-side...its best to use Headbolt sized bolts (if head is coming off anyway) or a sling (if head is not coming off).

I think that bolt hole is for the thermo time sensor (aka cold start sensor) on a fuel injected B20. Apparently some kind of non standard thread.

C1800 has it right...but I think that was just a handy place where those pragmatic Swedes could locate that sensor to pick up engine temp without adding a new mounting boss...or any new effort for that matter...

It is indeed a lifting lug bolt hole, used for tool SVO 2870.

The green book does give sizes. the fronts are 3/8" UNC but I can't interpret the one for the rear. The Volvo bracket might have a captive bolt as part of it. 1/2" UNC?

I think that we’re talking about 2different bolt holes. The one that we can see in the picture in post #1 appears to be the Thermo time switch receiver.

The bolt hole for the SVO tool is obscured in the picture by the rubber hose. It’s the bolt hole where the heater return pipe is clamped to.

At least that what it appears to me.

Isn't the thermo timer position at the front/this side of the head and normally covered by a plate with two bolts? The bolt hole at the rear is directly above the drain tap.

That temp sensing location in the Cooling Sys is for Aux Air Valve (on FI B20s), or Oil Cooler plumbing on B18 in early 1800s.

Thats the one Derek that the SVO tool screws into directly above the drain tap. In the end i just took a head bolt out and fitted a bracket to that and put it back in and engine is now out.
