Default Different problem but..

I’ve just bought a 58 plate Volvo v50 powershift 2.0d. I only got the car yesterday and this issue has occurred 5 times.

Upon coming to a stop the car turns itself off, if I put it into park and turn the key,it comes back on. I have told the garage and he thinks the gearbox needs reprogramming because it recently had a new turbo.

Does anyone have any similar issues or solutions

Thanks

You have obviously bought someone elses problem , does the engine stall and the ignition stay on? Does it come to rest with a judder ? Does it always start first time and off you go again? dump the car back on their forecourt and let them fix it before you drive it again … Potentially a £4000 job if it is the gearbox ..many don't have the mandatory oil and filter change at 54000 miles ...

Hi there is no judder or anything, power just literally goes off. The car starts fine first time every time, just this problem every so often. I do have a 6 month warranty with the car but I am rather worried after reading through some of the forums.

just the engine goes off and leaves all the other electrics working? and it only stalls when you are coming to a stop not when driving ? How often does it happen ?
I would advise them to put it into a dealer who is the specialist with all the experience , and can interpret any fault codes stored see what they can come up with ..

The electrics stay on and the engine just seems to cut out. I have driven around 200 miles and it has happened 5 times. I will tell the dealership your advice. He seems to think that reprogramming the gearbox due to a recently fitted turbo is the solution. I forgot to mention, an oil light has flashed up a couple of the times when stalling.

it depends what is happening , is the clutch not letting go when the car comes to a rest perhaps , reloading gearbox software is not the answer neither is the turbo .
The oil light should come on once the engine has stopped not before it has quite stopped this would indicate poor oil pressure perhaps to a lot of sludge in the sump caused by poor / neglected servicing … how many miles has it done? I am beginning to think well over 100000.

The car is on 75,000 miles and does have service history, although none between 2012 and 2015. I think the oil light does come on after the engine has cut and not before it. He mentioned the clutch might not be letting go but seemed to think a reprogramme is the answer. He assured me that he has the correct computer to plug it in, he will do this Saturday. I said about taking it to a Volvo specialist and he said they will never give a thumbs up in any case. I have requested that he does a gearbox service on the car, I wonder if this would help?

See if there is any mention of the gearbox oil and filter being changed on the 54000 mile service if not it probably too late and new oil would not help but obviously the first thing to do , software wont fix it . but it isn't your problem luckily, let them do their thing …

only volvo authorised repairers can do software ….

I feel a bit helpless in respect to the software being interpreted by a Volvo
Specialist. I have raised this concern and he claims to be able to do it, I feel I can’t force them. Is there really no way his software check will be adequate and is a Volvo specialist also advised for the gearbox service, cheers

Is there any way of improving gearbox health if this service has not been done?
