Catalyic converter removal

Has anyone removed there catalyic converter and had problems at MOT time. I have a 1991 440. I have read somwhere that the MOT test stations have a set limit for a type of engine and if a cat was fitted when built it may not get the correct emmisions, so would mine pass or fail ?

yes you can remove your cat and the car will still pass the emmisions ok, cat's were only required after 1 jan 1993

Thats what i thought, but when i read about the emissions matched to the engine and that volvos must have been one of the first companies to fit catalyic converters it just got me thinking that there may be a prob. Being that the MOT guy would expect a certain reading.

Hi Bob, your cars CO output must be less than 3.5% and the HC less than 1200ppm, lower emissions came out in August 92 and the requirement for all manufacturers to fit cats on new cars. There is no such thing as a cat test in the MOT only emissions tests which must be met. If your engine is up to spec and running normally you don't need the cat to pass your mot.
