Question Volvo 740 SE Power Problems

Hi There,

I am the owner of a 1989 Volvo 740 SE and love the car to bits, it appears to be developing all the usual faults for this model e.g. the tissue paper roof lining and dodgy fuel gauge etc but last weekend I came across a particulary nasty problem.

Whilst driving on the M6 through Birmingham the radio cut out and the dash lights came on extremely bright and I mean extrememly bright i.e. they could have been seen from space!

After the trip back home courtesy of Green Flag, I dropped it into the garage and was told that the alternator had had a problem and supplied more than the normal 12 volts to the car, this had in turn boiled the battery dry and blown almost all the light bulbs and fuses in my poor tank.

After three days in the garage I have it back, the only residual problems that I appear to have now is no reverse lights, which appears to be down to blown bulbs and no movement on the rpm gauge, I was wondering if there is an easy way to see if this has been fried also ?

Regards,
Gavin Jones

It is likely that the rev counter is fried as well - the only way to know for sure is to try a secondhand one.
A good breakers would either let you try it there or offer it on either money back or credit note - they do mark them to stop you sending yuour duff unit back
