Default Nokian WR G2 SUV - off, Nokian Z SUV - on for the summer!

OK update time, I swapped the Nokian WR G2's for the "summer" Nokian Z SUV's a couple of weeks a go and here are my current wear rates ....

Results after 21500 miles running on the Nokian WR G2 SUV's ....

3 winters, + 2 rotations .....

Fronts New - 8.2mm
Rears New - 8.2mm

Fronts after 21500 miles - 5.5mm average across the tread, slightly heavier on the inner shoulder (0.2mm)
Rears after 21500 miles - 5.5 mm average across the tread, slightly heavier on the inner shoulder (0.2mm)

So the new estimated life of the tyres to 3mm will be approx 40K 'ish miles, or 53K'ish for UK legal minimum (not wise IMO) with careful rotation/storage.

Opinion ....

These tyres have now done 3 winters inc snow and ice and lots of rain (most of the year in the west coast of Scotland ,) and 1 very hot Itallian summer ... 39 degree motorway temps (inc. two 1500 mile sprints in 48 hours @ silly speeds.) coped exceptionally well, all at eco pressures summer and winter.

So they are remarkable in my opinion, and are really "all season", they coped very well with the scorching Italian Autostrada's and the worst the west coast can chuck out.

Noise - Remarkably quiet on the motorway
Grip - outstanding in the wet and snow/ice
around town - excellent,
fast/very fast motorway - surprisingly surefooted not at all floppy nor fast wearing like the "doom" mongers predict.

Fuel consumption - overall average ...
town - 28mpg
motorway (behaving) - 35mpg
motorway (misbehaving) - 31mpg

Overall, the tyre seems very suited to the XC90, and deserves its reputation

All my own opinion, and shared for info .... no connection with Nokian Tyres plc ..... Hope it helps someone.

Just had a good look at your thread - very helpful.
My wife had a blow out at 80 mph on M5 yesterday - offside rear with tread completely detached from the sidewall. These were conti cross contacts with 20,000 miles and still had 4mm tread. I check them regularly (side walls, treads and pressures) and there had been no problems.
The car was very stable, she was fine and big sigh of relief.

Black mark for continental, I fear.

So for new tyres - obvious choice from your thread was nokian Z SUV but none available for a week in UK. I'm driving to Scotland on Sunday so no joy. I've gone for Pirelli scorpion zero's and hope this is a good second choice.

Hello K14, glad your better half is OK.

Sorry for the confusion this post was the feedback I had on the Nokian WR G2 SUV's over 21500 miles ..... not the Nokian Z SUV's ..... I have a thread on those tyres as well and they are equally as impressive IMO .....

see here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ght=nokian+suv

Hope it helps

Smile Winter Wheels and Tyres

I had Matador summer tyres which are made by continental, wore well and saved a lot of ££'s during the summer months.

In the winter switch to a set of winter wheels on Vredestein Wintrac which are phenominal in the snow and ice- i was genuinly shocked at how much grip you get.

Now sold the XC90 but have a set of Genuine 17" Volvo Antaeus alloys with Vredestein Wintrac tyres on for sale if you are interested in having a set of winter wheels/tyres.

If youre interested call me on 07795696238 - i can send photos etc if required.

Had these on the front of the car when I bought them and they were, in my opinion, dreadful in the wet.

The 18" XC90 tyre is 235/60 isn't it?

Sorry to be picky...

Seems like a good place to ask "any preferred tyres for 17in wheels" My local fitter suggested the conti, but he may only have a limited choice. If I can find another set of alloys may go down the summer & winter set path.

Cheers
