If I needed a second car I would jump at it!
Tempted but it would sit in the queue behind the Landy series 2 and the Bedford camper Van!

Just a quick point, if it has failed an MoT, one cannot 'carry over' the old one until its expiry date!

I have asked the MOT testing station at work & they say it is not the case, that car on the DVLA site is saying it's mot expires in Sept even though it has fail for its recent test..... I have heard in the past what you are saying but I can find no evidence that it is the case....

My understanding of the regs says that a failed car can only be driven to/from the MoT test station for the purposes of a booked repair or retest. After all, the car is no longer roadworthy.
And, heaven forgive, there were a collision, what a lovely 'wriggle out' for the insurance company. If however, the original MoT test station didn't issue a certificate of failure...

MoT failure
To be driven on the road a car must have a current MoT, so if it fails a test but the old certificate is still in date then in theory you are OK to drive it. BUT it's illegal to drive an unroadworthy car no matter what it's MoT status. Arguably a car that's failed an MoT is by definition unroadworthy. But then again a car with one failed number plate bulb would fail the MoT, and therefore be "unroadworthy ". But that hardly turns the car into a death-trap.
To me the law is very foggy on this. How many people get the car tested a week or two early so that they have a chance to fix any issues before the old MoT runs out? I guess if the car failed and was patently dangerous then driving it would be crazy anyway. Perhaps the best way to judge is to ask yourself if you'd be happy to let your wife/mistress/mother/daughter drive the car at 70mph round the M25? If the answer is "No" then why would you want to drive it yourself until it's fixed? The MoT is there to protect drivers, passengers and other road users from potentially deadly defects. It's not a perfect system, but in general terms it does work. Jack |

Yes it's one of the oddities of the system whereby you can present a car for the mot while it still has a valid certificate and should the car fail the mot then the certificate already on it remains valid and in force. So you can legally drive an mot failure about to your hearts content until the "pass"mot runs out.Crazy of course but thems the rules.
