Perhaps a stupid question but should the selector be moved quickly past reverse into drive or slowly?

If the car is stationary then it doesn't matter, if it isn't then you will have an expensive bill in your hands

Had the same issue on an 11 reg XC60 D3 with 45k on the clock, dealer replaced the gearbox under warranty as they don't 'repair' them.

Yes, sorted completely. They initially tried resetting adaptation thingy twice which made very little difference.

If you can, speak to your local dealer and try another cars box for comparison...

It not always easy comparing people's opinions....but I don't get any jolt to note...but without you sitting in my car how do we know it's not the same jolting movement!!!!

The only way I can get ours to misbehave is if I try to get off the brake as quickly as possible after selecting drive and then touch the throttle, then I get and feel a thump as the drive is taken up.

If I stay on the brake and select drive, then have an ever so slight pause followed by throttle there isn't anything to notice, it is the same then as just holding it in drive on the brake and then accelerating.

Bit of an update on my case - the dealer has told me the box needs replacing and after a dialogue with Volvo they don't seem willing to make any contribution towards the repair. To be fair to the dealer (who has been helpful throughout) they can't understand Volvo's decision.

In terms of the technical reason behind the fault they've suggested it's an internal oil leak or oil pressure issue. I'd say this is pretty on the money as the fault only normally occurs when the box has reached operating temperature, the change into drive first thing in the morning is always ok.

I'm obviously disappointed by this. As a family we've had an XC90 T6 bought new that had a gearbox failure at 35k miles (well known fault), a S60 bought second hand where the box failed at 60k miles and this XC60 bought second hand which has just ticked over 47k miles. Before anyone suggests it might be our driving style the cars were all driven by different family members who live apart from each other!

Might be worth taking to a volvo specialist not the dealer

How often do you put it into drive tho when its already warm?!

Mine on the other hand i think was caused by me not applying the handbrake before putting into parking i think... i hope

Thanks gusgecko for the suggestion
