Default Ticking / Tapping noise from engine under load

Hi Guys, my car has developed a ticking / tapping under hard acceleration over the past few weeks.

When driven normally with light revs the sound cannot be heard, neither can it be heard when the car is at a stand still but revving high.

However under load and also at higher revs the ticking get quite noticeable.

Over the past month i have given the engine a full service using Volvo parts and Carlube 0-30.

Has anybody else experienced a similar issue.

Kind regards David

Hi have you started using regular unleaded as opposed to super unleaded? What you could be hearing is the engine "pinking". I believe there is an anti-knock mechanism to prevent this from happening which my not be opperating, however, I'm far from an expertbut hopefully someone else on here can offer an opinion - cheers

If it's pinking (which exactly matches your description of the symptoms) this is a serious issue. It can damage bearings and/or melt pistons.

As a short-term measure to enable continued use of the car, an octane booster added to the petrol will reduce the engine's tendancy to pink.

But it needs to be fixed properly without delay. If not, you may find yourself in the market for a new engine.

John

I have the same D5 engine as you and same year , mine makes a slight ticking noise and has done for about the last 25k miles . I originally thought it could be camshaft wear as the car has gone way beyond normal service intervals without the oil being changed and its now on 152k but I am now inclined to think its due to one of the fuel injectors experiencing slight blow by at the seating area as there are oily stains around one of them . My car has many other faults and as this one is more annoying than performance related I will be leaving it be unless I can find out for sure whats causing it but I am certain its coming from the upper engine area and not tensioners or belts etc . I am not sure a diesel can pink in the same way as a petrol car ?

If its a diesel it won't be pinking.
Are you certain its engine noise and nothing to do with drive shafts/gearbox etc?

Bernard,

Does your car appear to surge under hard acceleration as in, power, backs off, power, backs off, despite your foot being planted to the floor?

Just out of curiosity as i have a leak somewhere on injector 1, very very minor and also have the ticking sound on acceleration aswell as the surging mentioned.

Rich ,
Mine does pick up ok on acceleration but I wouldnt say its a surge but I have a holed intercooler as well and the problems thats causing is possibly more severe than an injector not seating . Engine goes into limp mode if trying to accelerate quickly past 2500 rpm but with gentle driving everything is ok and still enough power to easily keep up with motorway traffic . Engine urgent service message appears on DIM with limp mode and need to stop and start again to clear it but then engine is back to normal . None of these issues is affecting fuel consumption however I read on here somewhere that an injector not correctly seated can eventually become very difficult to remove if left too long , knowing my luck its seized solid .

owyn , on mine I am certain the ticking is upper engine noise and is not gearbox or drive shafts but dont know about Davids car .

If it's pertrol, i'd be tempted to check the exhaust manifold gasket too for leaks

that sounds like blow back on the injector.

Sorry i should have added that my S60 is a D5 Diesel.

Reading above, my car does have dips in power, at 2,000 rpm then power drops of and i get a bit of turbo stall but then it picks up again nicely.
I am not sure if the turbo dropping off is causing the power loss or the power loss is the cause of the turbo dropping off.
I do get a turbo dumping sound when the power drops off.

Thanks David
