I know what you're describing Ron but I've never come across this sort of wear on any that I've done the tappets on. The awkward thing is having to use a pair of feelers to get the measurement you want. Having a set of go/no go feelers is probably best.

A note on the Coyes timing gears.
As previously noted the crank gear has no drillings for a puller, this makes removal a huge pain in the ass, especially with engine in situ. The camgear also only has 2 holes, not 3, making the use of a standard 3 armed puller tricky as well. I would go for a steel set next time. Finally, on cam torques, KG trimning also recommend a low torque and loctite green thread lock. |

You can remove the cloyes crank gear with two small fox wedges future diametrically opposite.
A two arm puller worked perfectly well on the cam gear. I cannot comment on the steel gears as I've never fitted a set. However I have no discernible gear noise. They are also significantly cheaper when buying from Rock Auto Russ |
