The genuine volvo Towing electrical kits are all 13 pin and need the software to go with them to activate the towing functions , one of them is de-activating the parking sensors when something is being towed .

I chose 7pin over 13 pin as that's what my bike rack had. Anyway it works so I suppose that's all that matteers!

When volvo did my towbar electrics on my 2012 MY V70 3 years ago I had a choice of 7 or 13 pin so they definately were doing them no so long ago. Maybe newer car are 13 pin only as you can get adaptors to go to 7 pin for a few pounds.

well that's odd they were discontinued from the accessory list in around 2007 , maybe it wasn't a volvo kit , maybe they supplied a 13 to 7 pin adaptor for you . I should know i have been working on them and fitting them for 40 years to date :-)

The Volvo system uses specific hardware and software and has the following features:

- Bulb failure warning system extended to trailer (quite comprehensive on later models)

- Fog light on car disabled when trailer attached (programmable)

- Parking sensors disabled when trailer attached

Some aftermarket kits can also do the above, but need software.

And most importantly....

- Trailer stability assist added to the DTSC program

I was verbally given the same choice (by a lease company) when I ordered a 2017 MY XC60 in April 2016 with a towbar as an option - I asked for 7 pin and what came was 13-pin socket and a genuine Volvo 13 pin to 7 pin adaptor :-)

I am currently looking through the options with other vendors. They are offering Volvo wiring but there was no mention of updating software but will be something I will be asking. I'm waiting for Volvo garage to call me back with a price which Im sure will have a massive premium.

I trying to workout which is the best type of Tow bar for a XC60 R-Design. I have tried looking online but I'm struggling to see any that actually look decent.
