I don't see why not? I've removed all my rear suspension on my V40 myself before. If yours has not been apart before, be prepared for some of the bolts to be siezed! Plenty of WD40 sprayed over all the bolts a couple of weeks before really helps!
I would fit OEM style bushes if your car is standard as the Polyurethane bushes will transmit alot more road noise! Not something I'm bothered about, but as V40's are not that quiet to begin with you may not wish to make it worse! |

Ok, quick update, Volvo want £472.00 + VAT to replace both bushes...... seems excessive after reading Clan's previous post. I've found a Volvo spares dealer who can supply both rear trailing arms including bushes for £62.00 delivered. I've spoken to a local garage and they'll fit em for similar money.
Seems like thats my best option...... |

Its all sorted now. I got a pair of rear trailing arms that had already had new bushes fitted from a Volvo salvage centre and had the garage fit them. Total cost £180.00.

Not trying to prove you wrong, I'm not that sort of person. Just passing on my experience. I'm into restoring old mini's and VW's and have learned the hard way |

An aftermarket work around for the VOLVO V40 Bushes
Hey all, sorry to resurrect such an old post but I'm a time served master technician at DJM Auto Solutions up in Newcastle with years of experience with Volvos. We've come across this issue recently on a customer's car (a number of times actually) both with the V40 and also Mitsubishi FTO platforms.
Some of the aftermarket bushes are compression fit rubber/metal 77mm bushes whereby you have to use a specific compressor (not available to indie garages) to compress the bush prior to install but more recently, Febi have started supplying slightly smaller 70mm NON-compression bushes that just press in with standard bush tools rather snugly with no compliance issues or play at all. This has shortened our trailing arm bush install time by half at least as we've had to fight to compress these bushes before installing them which is a right pain of a job. For future reference, the OE part number is 30638366 and the Febi crossover part number is 41138. If anyone requires a photo guide on how to replace these, i'd be more than happy to write something up to help all you V40/S40 owners out. Thanks, David |

Hello David
Are the Volvo 30638366 bushes suitable for the Phase 2 Volvo V40. I have a 2003 V40 and I've had an advisory for the rear trailing arm bushes. I've been to my local Volvo dealer and they now longer even have the special tool for the Ph 2 rear trailing arm bushes. If the 30638366 bushes fit the Ph 2 rear trailing arms then my (highly competent) mate who owns/runs a local indy can fit them. Thanks Tim |

Hi Clan
Sorry for late reply, my sister has been a bit poorly recently. I wasn't aware that the dealer 'had' to do repairs if required. The implication is they probably don't want to do the repair so palmed me off with the old 'We haven't got the tool anymore' excuse. The fact they obviously don't want to do the repair would worry me if I got them to do it....they would probably make an a**e of it out of spite and it would be my word against theirs. As I say, if I could get my hands on the special tool, my mate Alex would do the job very competently. Do you, or anyone else have the number for the tool? It's always possible one will come up on Ebay at some time. Tim |

firstly the part number for the bush was 30851257 in 2014 , it may have been superseded since then to your number , I don't know ... The tools needed are: 999 5575 999 5588 999 5669 The first tool is the standard hydraulic hand held ram which every dealer has for general pressing jobs on bushes , The other two are a disc and a sleeve and rod for pulling and pushing the bush in and out with the hydraulic ram tool . The bush is plastic and bigger than the hole that is why you need the hydraulic hand press tool , it needs a constant powerful press so that bush is pulled in continuously at the same speed , if you stop it expands and is hard to get moving again . I would just book it into a dealer and let them sort their own tools out if they have lost them ...they can't pick and choose which jobs they do ! The price for labour should not be more than 1.2 hours for the pair . Its very easy with the correct tools you see, but a nightmare without them .

Skandix list the genuine Volvo special tools. About 150 euros + postage which is quite hefty. No mention of the hydraulic ram that Clan mentions above so presumably the special tools will not be much use without the ram. HTH.
