Could just be sticky. I had similar with the slider pins which was giving uneven pad wear as the top pins always seem to get stuck. It might just need a bit of use to free it up

I think you’re right, I’ve barely driven it in the last month as have been getting over a broken ankle. It never normally binds when driven regularly, hopefully the garage will get to the bottom of it, I’ve left it with them as have run out of time work wise this week. Thankfully my petrol 940 is in good fettle and ready to go!

It's a shame you've left it with the garage Phil, i would have suggested taking it elsewhere. Many moons ago i had a car that the tester kept finding new faults on with each retest, took that elsewhere in the end. Straight through and half the so-called faults that it had failed on hadn't been touched.
Also being a little more specific, in about 1995 i had a 14 year old Cortina and the local paper gave a voucher for a free MoT - it was due so i put it in. The failure list was like War & Peace! I already knew about the void bushes and the tiny (about the size of a 50p piece, the old ones) hole in the drivers sill but some of the alleged failure points were ridiculous. Long story short, i did the void bushes and the firm next door welded my sill buck-shee one lunch time (it was nearly invisible too, great job!) and i put it into a garage at random and paid the normal fee. As you can imagine it went straight through - except failing on the rear fog lights as both bulbs had blown at some point between me dropping the car off and going into the workshop! Bought and fitted 2x 21W bulbs and drove away with a years test. Irked me paying for the bulbs as i got them free at work but worth it firstly to have the MoT then and there and secondly to not have to admit at work the rear fogs had failed as i'd recently given a colleague some stick because his work van failed on the rear fog light! Regardless of all that waffle, i'd suggest finding somewhere else to take it next year although there does seem to be a rash of stupid failure points coming about recently and poor attitude from some testers.

I won’t use the current tester again. For many years I used a garage in Poole who are classic Volvo enthusiasts and understand these cars inside out, and had no trouble with them at all, but they’re now an hour away since I’ve moved, which makes logistics tricky with drop offs etc. I think it might be worth the effort next time, though I’m really thorough with prep prior to MOTs and have had very few failures in the past, although this time I’ve not had my usual time to go through the car in the week beforehand due to my broken ankle. I knew the handbrake was likely to be a fail point as it was weak, but the ARB bushes were in no way fail worthy in my opinion. Some of the advisories are a bit odd, too…corroded front springs (they aren’t), play in the prop centre support bearing (It was new literally months ago), play in inner tie rods (I had the car in the air this morning and couldn’t find any play at all)…either they’re being creative or I’m being lax.

Basically it's things they put down as advisories to show they've looked at the car, they could be accused of being hyper-critical but draws attention away from something they may have missed. Sadly it's a common practice, usually by testers that aren't too sure of themselves to cover themselves if something more serious they've missed causes a problem - they can then say they gave it a thorough inspection but that fault wasn't present at the time. A thought crossed my mind - it might be worth giving your old MoT place in Poole a call and see if they know of anywhere closer to home for you or if you can book a time for the MoT, drive in, wait while it's done and then drive home after.

Just one of the issues you have mentioned.
First he reported that the FOS piston sticking. You fitted new front pads and freed all the sliders. Next time he reported the FNS sticking. Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that this is the first time that you have used this particular tester. I would then have removed the car and taken it elsewhere for a second opinion. I think that I would be retrieving the car from that particular tester forthwith.

Well, I finally got it through…had to fit a new NSF caliper in the end, but we got there.
Oddly enough, a bunch of the advisories disappeared on the retest, too…
