Headgasket Gone, What to replace
Hi
Seems the headgasket may have gone on the estate. Cooling system is forcing water out the end of the rad hoses. When you take the expansion tank cap off, the water stops coming out the hoses, presumably because the pressure is now escaping out the expansion tank. Ive had a word with my mechanic friend and he thinks it sounds like headgasket. Im currently having to fill up the expansion tank every day, mainly because of the water being forced out the end of the top rad hose and down the side of the radiator! Now my mechanic is a very good friend, who said if he was doing the headgasket, may as well do it properly and do a few other things too, so heres the list at the moment. Headgasket (head skimmed etc) New cambelt (Last had one 3 years / 30,000 miles ago) may as well fit one as a matter of course New fan / PAS belts Full service (Dizzy Cap and rotar arm especially for the benefit of LPG system) Can anyone think of anything else we may as well replace while the engine is in bits? Anything that might as well be changed to save future hassle. Water pump is about 18 months old so that should be ok. and if anyone can still help with what bushes i need to order, Id like to get those done at the same time. Cheers James

Are you sure the head gasket has gone and its not just that the coolant hoses and/or radiator is leaking?
If the head gasket has gone, the coolant will quickly become discoloured and smelly as oil and unburnt fuel is forced into it. As the hoses age, they become less pliable and so it is easier for leaks to appear at the ends where they connected to the radiator and such. |

not 100% sure. Im taking the car over to him next weekend when hes going to pressure test the system and have a good look around it. He did also say it could the the rad, im just assuming worst case scenario!

As for the head skim - may not need it if the engine hasn't over heated. It wont warp unless it gets too hot.

I would do a full top end gasket kit, head, inlet, and exhaust, cam shaft oil seals, valve stem oil seals, hushers, valve shims, and the top hat gasket to the water pump.

The pressure test will tell you a lot. It could be as simple as a failed coolant filler cap.
If it is the HG, that list (along with Simon's suggestions for additional seals which are likely to be 'tired') looks good. cheers James

Fit new spark plugs while you're at it - seeing as how numbers 3 and four are PITN to fit with the head in its normal position (that is on top of the block).

I'd try a bottle of K-seal first! It's not guaranteed , but seems to work in 80% of cases.

Headgasket on a 4 cylinder Volvo is easy peasy. You have loads of room and the engine is big with no small fiddly bits. Not like some of the new cars.
I did mine last year and to be honest would have finished the job in about 2 hours if I hadn't damaged the turbo return pipe oil feed O ring. Get it skimmed though as it costs a lot less than having to do it all again!! SC |
