Default Volvo 760 turns 30 - The car that saved Volvo Car Corporatio

In February 1982 - 30 years ago - the new Volvo 760 GLE was launched. No typical Volvo, yet unmistakably a Volvo. Seen as elegant and exciting with its characteristic design it was well received. The 760 became the car that actually saved Volvo Car Corporation back then and paved the way to the modern company of today

With production starting in 1966 in the form of the 144 and ending 5th May 1993 that was one heck of a run with over 2.8million 240's produced plus however many 140's

next year will be 20 years since the last 240 rolled of the line. It would be nice to do something to mark the ocasion.

Mainly Chinas aquisition of Volvo and the thought that they might completely bloody ruin them, in much the same way they have with MG.....

Some of the more modern Volvos are not exactly blue ribband cars and given the Chinese ethic of ignoring quality (both design and materials) in all industries and not just the car industry. We may be on the cusp of some truely woefull piles of poo.
Although of course I hope this is not the case

The Chinese seem to be letting Volvo show them how to build a car correctly. They seem to want to be world-class and are looking for ways of shortcutting the learning curve that Japan and Korea had to go through. Hopefully, they'll learn and their products will benefit too.

Default Chips

Just remember - most of the on-board chips are Chinese copies of mullard/texas et al. 8080 chip origin - once you have partaken of these chips - you will need another portion fairly quickly...............sorry, might be a different joke - but the sentiment is the same.......the soldering would not pass muster for a 1st year electrical eng. apprentice, the software's dire and needs regular updates because the original code is suspect and over time the originator is walking away from the consequences.

Bring back simple machines - mpg/kmpl is not improved, acceleration is little better than 30 years ago, the low lead petrol is benzene dependent - the diesel is ruining agriculture on the basis of eco-diesel................improved design - don't think so!

I owned one of the 1982 760 GLE saloons and it was absolutely fantastic.

It was a smooth, quiet and comfortable, in metallic black and red leather interior, with A/C, 4 x electric windows, heated seats and an excellent 2856cc V6 engine.

Gone, but not forgotten.

I'd like to add to this: the 30th Anniversary is very much to celebrate the launch of the 700 range, it was really the 740 that saved Volvo, the 760 was merely the springboard.

And repeating a previous comment I've made, that the 700 is the last"classic"Volvo: Swedish DNA (designed by Jan Wilsgaard) and RWD.

Prufrock.
