Jim, I'm not into judging any more (!) as I too think some degree of personalisation is perfectly OK - its your car after all. Mr Volvo got a lot wrong when he designed his cars - that original parcels shelf is pathetic in my opinion. I established the maximum forwards position of the gear lever in mine then made a full-width shelf for my car, edged it with a polished alloy capping and faced it with carpet to match that on my floor. Fine for the map-book (I'm old-fashioned....), madam's gloves and papers, but not original so marked down. I don't mind as I consider it an improvement.

It’s not puffery if you can back it up...

Concur that the later flat badge would look better on the tailgate; to that end, you could apply similar placement criteria as that for the sedan, centering between plate and edge of the tailgate, using plate’s horizontal midline for your vertical reference point. Use trim adhesive tape to avoid drilling. Done properly with attention to other details, you might convince the unknowing into thinking it was a factory config.

Cheers,

Chris

I half expected my comment to be "questioned". Yes. it's owners choice. Paul, yes the shelf is disliked by many especially when it gets old and frail. It is designed that way on purpose so as to deflect in an accident. What it does do is to make a handy shelf for your handbook in its nice blue folder. Being there allows it to get wet from the drips from the leaky screen seal. How many handbooks have you seen that have suffered from water damage? 😊
