it really depends what you want ... both engines are build for a purpose.

T5 is a lovely drive, very happy with mine. get about 32mpg, had it for 4 years from 43k to 151k now. Probably needs a bit more tlc but probably be a smoother car.

Havent had a D5 but previosuly had an S40 2.0D and the mpg wasnt that far off this car on my long daily commutes if I just drove a bit slower.

If you are into more spirited driving and tuning, the T5 would be the choice.

How about a remap for your current car......

Should narrow/ reverse the performance deficit.

Had a chance to drive in mapped D5 and also to drive against it on motorway. It was heavily modified one with 240HP if remember correctly and have to admit my s1 (map only) T5 struggled to keep up. It was very impressive indeed but with a cost of black cloud (literally like starting up diesel locomotive) for whole acceleration time. I would actually be ashamed driving like that, apart of legality issues.
Would take my less torquy T5 any time over that, but as said above, keep your wallet handy as youwill need it much more often...

How likely are the v50 t5 awd to come up for sale? Or is it pointless even looking for 1 and just stick with the front wheel drive ones?

Seen them both mate, one on autotrader is too higher mileage for me and the one ebay is a little too expensive. I have made an offer on the ebay one but it was rejected.

Its not to far from me to be honest so I might take a trip up next week to have a look and make a slightly better offer. I just feel that £6k is overpriced in my view and for that type of money I could pick up something else for example a 2011-12 Octavia vrs tsi or similar.
