Sounds more like the instrument then Damo or perhaps the connections on the back of the cluster. Worth checking and tightening those first before pulling the speedo apart.

Hi. I feel your pain. Search out my instrument cluster tales. Finally solved with expensive eBay purchase of replacement cluster. Took 6 months to sort.

I had this last year… getting the cluster out is an exercise is swearing to get the surround off, but once that’s off it’s fairly plain sailing.

Separate the clear plastic from the white part - carefully remove all the screws and gently pry them apart. If you meet resistance you’ve probably missed a screw. Extract the speedo and examine the solder joints. I didn’t have any blown capacitors but I did find a lot of verdigris on the copper parts. Get in there with plenty of contact cleaner and a toothbrush, toothpick (gently does it, slow and steady wins the race).

Put it back together again and hopefully it will all work again.

When my speedo went intermittent I found that a couple of the capacitors were leaking so all five were replaced but that didn’t cure it. On the advice of my brother who had replaced the capacitors I obtained a fibre glass pencil to clean up the PCB. What finally cured it was individually removing the screws which screw into and through the PCB and cleaning the PCB beneath them with the fibre glass pencil. Much easier than cleaner and toothbrush etc.

The speedo on my 940 diesel started misbehaving (or stopped altogether - it was years ago and I can't remember for sure).

At the suggestion of the local garage man who is a former Volvo area service manager, I checked the wiring at the rear of the back axle and found that it was falling to bits where it was joined to the connector of (I assume) the ABS/speed sensor.

I remade all the connections, soldering where necessary, and no trouble with the speedo since then.

Many thanks to all who replied....
So. The whole reason behind this post is that i bought a used st of clocks off ebay a year or two ago so that i had a replacement when i sent mine off....
i thought the new ones MAY cure my stalling problem but it didn't!!!
it does not appear to overrun like it used to sometimes but still stalls!!
At least i have a speedo that works correctly...ish....no night lights but hope to cure soon...

No personal experience with these people, but they seem highly thought of here in the Netherlands: https://www.ets1.nl/English-customers/
