Yes, Othen is right. The GL had rectangular headlamps instead of square, overdrive, tinted windows, sunroof, metallic paint and choice of leather or plush upholstery. The GLE got the fuel injection if I remember correctly.

Why did they move away from twin SUs?

The 1980 244 GL is a pretty good solution for most people interested in classic cars (in my humble opinion) because:
A. It will be eligible for historic taxation class (so no road tax), this makes it quite a lot more valuable than the younger motor cars. B. It will not need a MoT test. C. It is young enough to have disc brakes all round, halogen lights, an OHC engine and PAS. D. It is old enough to not have any computers or complex electronics (except the quartz clock). E. It is really simple to maintain, which is probably the most important factor with 40 year old motor cars - there is no point having some complex beast for which spares are impossible to obtain. The single carburettor is a really good solution in this context - far easier and cheaper to maintain in fairly good order than a FI system. F. 244s are sill relatively cheap (compared with contemporary motor cars such as Ford Escorts and Capris). Like all 240s the prices top out at £6,000 - cars have to be almost perfect to make that much. :-)

I’m not sure the 244 came with twin SU carburettors - not for the UK market anyway.

240s don't really need PAS if they're running 175/80/14s and even 185/80/14s, which the estates have, because the original geometry was so good. Negativer Lenkrollradius was the German phrase, originally coined by Audi, to describe the set-up and Volvo adopted the configuration for the 200-series chassis.
Go to low, in this context 70-series, profile rubber and PAS is probably desirable. The last 4-cylinder Volvo with twin carbs was the 144S (for sporting).
