1.6 D2 a complete load of tut??
I've been browsing the forum lately and it seems quite a few people are having issues with the 1.6 D2. Whether that be in a v40 or v60 etc. As far as I understand it's a ford/psa unit similar to what was used in s40 v50 and the tails of woe from that side of the forum are endless. Now it's replaced with the VEA but there are loads of D2s around. Are they really that bad I mean from what I've read I wouldn't have one. Injectors failing at less than 20k miles sounds like a ford to me....

I had a 2009 V50 DRIVe. It was a bit slow - seemed to be somewhat strangulated compared to my heavier and similar powered 1997 Passat TDi. Also less economical. Yes, this was strange. The required DPF replacement at 72k miles was a bit of a (financial) shock.

they are fine as long as you service them and replace the DPF filter when required, if you don't then expect big repair bills later on.
for what its worth the newer D2's have a better DPF system that doesn't require replacing the filters ever 72k, I think its from 2012 onwards. Ignoring the dpf can result in some nasty bills, worst case, dpf, sensors, pipes, egr & turbo failure. for the sake of around £300 fitted just change the dpf on time and you should be fine |

I never understood the mindset leading to buying a of heavy car with a small /low powered diesel ( or an even smaller turbo petrol engine). .
Better to get the bigger engine and due to gearing, in effect drive it gently at the same speeds the smaller engined cars are being thrashed at. |

You are spot on. I'm now getting an extra 5mpg from a 2.0d Superb auto than from my 1.6d manual V60. Lesson learnt. I should add I have used this engine in a V40 courtesy car and it was brilliant in that. Basically, match the engine to the car 😉

I've got a Sept 2011 (so 2012 model year) C30 1.6d DRIVe which I believe is designated 'D2'? It has just clocked 103k miles. I'm the 2nd owner. The original owner was meticulous and I have every bill/invoice. It has never had anything done DPF-wise.
In fact the only things apart from servicing have been consummable items - tyres, brakes, battery, bulbs, cambelt. I believe the engine is a Peugeot diesel? And Ford and Mazda also used it in their 'Ford Focus' platform cars of that era. I've had mine mapped and the performance is adequate, even quite enjoyable. Can't complain about the economy. 55 mpg short local journeys and had 68 mpg on a 200 mile motorway run. I agree it would be rather pitiful in the larger Volvos and I would never buy one of those with this teeny little diesel engine. Get a D5. Great power and still very econimical. Have I missed something or just lucky?

I'm certain it should of had a dpf changed by now, we have seen some last as much as 110k but that's more of an exception than the rule.
Some newer ones do have a lifetime system,we have a customer with an s80 with a 1.6d with over 240k on the clock, had to from new and loves it, personally i prefer the larger engines, but it's all down to personal preference. I cant remember when Volvo switched to the lifetime dpf system on the 1.6's you might be lucky and have the newer version |

I think they put this 1.6 DRIVe engine in a V70. That must have been really slow.
