What to do
Hi all again looking to see what people think.
My gearbox basically needs rebuilding, it’s started slipping badly so after talking to a few places it will be £2000+ vat to sort it, the car is on 171000 miles what would everyone do get rid of it or fix it. A newer Volvo XC90 would cost me about 10k to get a lower mileage nice spec one so really not sure what to do. Daniel |

A very difficult question! If you can do most of the repairs yourself then possibly worth keeping but these cars will always be a money pit! Also you need to factor in that even a 2010 plate will need repairs plus you have depreciation which is likely at least 1K per year if not more.
if it does not have a DPF then this alone is a good reason to keep it. |

I do bits myself and my local garage look after the car so it’s not stupid money to look after but that’s another thing if I buy another one I’m starting again with a new car.
It does have a dpf, sorry forgot to say it’s a 56 plate d5 but touch wood it’s been fine so far, just not a easy thing to decide. |

Hi Daniel.
If the rest of the car is reasonable, I would bite the bullet. You should get a warranty with the repair. The alternative I guess is to sell, but with a faulty gearbox, you will probably not get more than £1000. On the other hand for £3000, you will still potentially be buying more trouble. So my choice wouod be to stick with your old car and get a replacement box. Cheers john l |

Hi Daniel, have you had a look at getting hold of a replacement 2nd hand box?

Thanks for the replies both, I have looked at second hand boxes but still a fair few hundred pounds plus fitting and oils and my concern could be in the same boat in a few months.
The car is in real good condition just had a full service and m o t with no advisories so it’s good I have always had anything sorted as soon as it plays up. I’m pushing towards getting it rebuilt but not rushing into anything as it still drives at the moment but needs doing fairly soon. The rebuilt box would have a 12 month warranty. Thanks again Daniel |
