Good stuff!!

What are you going to do to this one? Are you going to tune it in any way?

Later,
Dan.

I've got the suspension, brakes, dump valve and bits to swap over from the other one.

Not sure what else really. May take the head off the other engine and do a bit of headwork to it if I have the time. Then put that on this one. That should make a healthy difference.

We'll have to see what happens. :-)

How's yours comming along?

Why not add a *small* bleed off onto the wastegate line and get the boost up a bit? ;-)

To which car of mine are you referring? I have changed it you see.....

Hi Chris.

A bleed will still allow the ECU to activate the boost control solenoid, but it will raise the pressure that the manifold actually sees. Obviously Optimax will be a requirement at that point, but the ignition and injection system should alter their parameters to keep pace as the lambda sensor will tell the ECU that the fuel rate needs to go up to match the extra air being pumped in. Not sure *exactly* how it would work on a 440 With a garrett T2 turbo on it, but with care and patience it should give tangible gains. Shortening the wastegate rod a couple of turns is an alternative to the bleed off, of course, and is an effective (and truely free) mod if done carefully and correctly.

Actually, I had 3 440s in all.
A 1991 440 GLE (Carb), a 1990 440 Turbo (Non tweaked as I had no idea of what could be done at the time.......)and a 1995 440 2.0i SE.

Then I bought a 1998 S40 2.0T. That didn't have enough power (although I did tweak it to .9Bar whilst I had it) and so I got a 1999 S40 T4 instead.
I would still have that now, if it wasn't for our car use changing.
I now I have a 2000 C70 T5 Coupe. Veeeeeeery nice!

I would consider going to RICA engineering in Bromsgrove to get your car chipped if you want a more long term solution. I bet they could get 180BHP and 250Nm out of a 440 turbo very easily. It would be interesting, and with a car the weight of a 440, it should really fly with that amount of power!

Do you know what the base boost pressure is on a 440 turbo by any chance?
I have read it is as low as .25bar (approx 3.7psi!)
That would make it a LPT model with Volvos current naming conventions!
Any idea if those are correct values?

Anyway, best of luck with your car and keep us up to date on your progress/mods.

Cheers,
Dan.

Nice one on the S40's and C70. Nice cars! :-)

I'm not really a fixed map chip guy. I have a programmable ECU here that i'm putting on a 1.6 16V Nova that im turboing for a mate. Should be a laugh. I may get an ecu for myself, then keep it as they can be swapped from car to car.

Yeah, there are some low boost pressure figures in the 440 data book. But thats what the wastegate is set to. As you proberbly know the boost solonoid 'hides' the pressure from the wastegate till it reaches the set limit. I think its around 0.7-0.9 bar for the 440. I'm getting a boost gauge so we'll see. I'll proberbly take it to the end of the yellow scale on the standard gauge. :-)

I was looking at 850 T5's they look nice, but it would have to be a high miler for the money I have. I'm also into Vauxhalls, a Calibra/Cav Turbo 4x4 should be in reach soon. So we'll have to see what happens.

Cya, Chris.

Hi Chris.

RICA do set the map up statically, however they can reprogram as many times as you want, to allow for every mod you do *and* they specialise in Volvos as well! ;-)

As for the Cav and Calibra Turbos, I have heard real horror stories about the differential on these cars being almost a consumable item.
Are you aware of that? It can cost you dear if you are not aware of it.
Apart from the rather 'agricultural' 4WD setup however, they are nice motors indeed.

I have to say you will be far more individual pumping up a 440 to silly power levels than 'yet another Vauxhall'... I have read of one 440 being over 200BHP!
Mind you the problem the likes of you and I have with our liking for Volvos is the fact that tuning and styling kit is hard to come by, whereas with the Vauxhalls........Well that is a different matter isn't it?! :)

Later,
Dan.:)

RICA sound good. May check 'em out if I decide to mod this. :)

Yeah the 4x4 system has a few quirks. It isn't really weak (300-400bhp cars having no real probs, yet). Just the precautions are not taken by people as they should. Tread depths need to be quite close, the oil changes in the diffs and that have to be done etc. Same with most other 4x4 systems really.

My only reservations about tuning the 440 are it's styling (late ones are nice, but i couldn't find a decent late turbo), and the engine. The engine is strange, inlet and exhaust on the same side, turbo's a tad small etc. Quite like something bigger 2.0+ and a more modern design 16/20V to go mad with.

All cars are money pits for tuning, I wanna get something that i'll be happy with for a while. :-)

It will still get a bit of treatment though. Standard cars are boring!

I hear you on that!

There is still plenty that can be done even with a non cross flow cylinder head.

You can even make the older 440s look like the newer ones with not too much effort.

Check this:

Anyway good luck in what ever you do.

Cheers,
Dan.
