Cam Belt for 340 1.7GL

I want to treat my 1989 340GL 1.7 to a new cambelt. Registered in Nov. 1989 and engine number B17000089886.Slightly confused whether it's the 124 tooth or 125 tooth belt required as websites don't make the Volvo O.E.M. Part number and it's application too clear. Obviously disastrous to buy the wrong 'un, so any advice gratefully received,

And the easy way to tell the difference is early has a metal cam cover and late is plastic

Yours will be the later version

That's what I found, plastic cam belt cover is the later one. I had two 1.7's at the same time, early one with metal cover, later with plastic.

Check the belt bearing, replacement is even better. I re-greased mine, was OK.

You probably know already that these are "interference" engines, meaning that if the cam is not in the correct position when a piston moves, bent valve(s) will occur.

I learnt the hard way, having a belt break. I knew it was on it's way, but ignored it for too long due to serious medical family problems. Replacement head was fitted, did not cost that much really.

Thanks for that helpful post, but the websites I have visited have two different Volvo O.E.M. Part Numbers, one is 124 tooth and the other is 125 tooth and I haven't yet been able to establish which is the correct Part No. for my vehicle. Obviously, It's critical to get it right or I'll be dis-entangling the valves !!

I will look at my stock of belts and see what I have written on the packets.

I have written on the boxes:

124 tooth-early 340

125 tooth-later 340

As mentioned, early 340 has metal cam belt cover, later has plastic cover.

My bet is yours is the 125 tooth, but easy to check, just remove cover, very easy, and see if there are markings on the belt.

Thanks for that info. and that points me in the right direction. Is there any form of Part Numbering on the 125 tooth Cam Belt packaging ? If not, I'll whip the cam belt cover off and see if there are any details on the belt, as you suggest. Thanks again to everybody for the speedy replise and assistance.
