Snoodini out of interest how long do you have to have preconditioning on for as a minimum to come outside to a defrosted car?

I assume you have a T8...?

You assume correct but probably for the wrong reasons. The fuel fired heater is available as an option on all models and specs in Sweden, I know this is not the case in the UK.

15-20 minutes is usually good enough however at home I have a carport so it's never snow or ice covered when parked at home. Preconditioning for 10 minutes starts to make an appreciable difference to the interior climate when it's say -10 outside.

@Snoodini - were these PTC heaters ever fitted as standard in the UK market? I have had a few Volvos over the past 10-15 years and have seen no evidence of one working.

What intrigues me is the current draw of this PTC heater. At 1250w it will be circa 100amps. If this thing runs on a cold morning start up along with the fan motor; wipers; heated seats; lights; heated rear window etc.... then the total current draw must be nearly 250amps. I thought that most alternators, even heavy duty ones, were only circa 180 to 200 Ah?

Is it ever frosty in Swansea? I thought it was permanently 10c and raining! (I used to live near Newport btw)

They are controlled with a PWM signal so never on fully , they get short bursts of full power which last milliseconds each .. also as soon as they get warm the resistance increases so current drops off , I would imagine 1200w is when -30 C outside for example for very short time ! the wires feeding is are certainly thick though .

My last car had heated screen but this one came with HUD (did not know it was choice tbh.

Anyway first frost of the year today. 6 mins before going outside I put on the preconditioning and by the time I was outside the car was warm and steam was coming off the windscreen.

So no need for heated windscreen with an aux heater. Glad I have the HUD option now!

Picked my new Rdesign pro up this morning. Specced with heating screen

Delivered with HUD! Er.

I've noticed the car has a parking climate option which my XC40 didn't. Now I've read into all this before and didn't think this worked as you need a Fuel-Fired Heater with Pre-Conditioning Functions? However, according to the xc60 features page for UK versions, it shows as the XC60 does have it (auxiliary heater)? Is that correct?

https://www.volvocars.com/uk/cars/ne...?redirect=true

I'm in discussions with the dealer - but this may be a big help?

Ah of course, hadn't thought of that.

I've sussed the car doesn't have the facility though - as has been covered on here before anyway. Was hopeful it may be an addition for MY21.

Oh well - have to say a day with HUD - yeah its very good!
