V70 D5 (D5244T5) Cambelt Split on startup
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on possible damages caused by the cambelt splitting on my Volvo V70 D5 engine. I have started stripping the engine in preparation for replacing the cam belt and have found that the aux drive belt which drives the air con (small belt) has snapped and lodged its self within the cam belt area causing it to split almost the full length of the belt but not snapping the belt. I have turned the crank clockwise until the timing marks line up on the cam sprocket and cam belt cover and would appreciate and info on what the orientation of the crank pulley should be so I have an initial indication of whether the belt has slipped a tooth or more and whether it is worth replacing the belt and progressing the rebuild. I have pics to show my findings but am struggling to up load them! Thanks |

With the cam marks lined up, the crank pulley should be like this with the 4 bolts in a regular square shape and the locating pin at the 12 o'clock position.
For more detail about the specific crank timing mark aligning with a casting on the oil pump housing, click on my signature and scroll down the list of videos to my D5 Cambelt Change Video.

Based on that picture, I think you'll find the news won't be good unfortunately.

I will attempt to get the crank pulley off in the next couple of days and then align the crank timing marks, put a new belt and tensioner on and then see if the engine will turn over by hand.
Is it possible that when I was turning the crank to align the timing marks that the belt slipped on the teeth as I did feel it go free all of a sudden ?? If the news is not good, how easy is it to remove/replace the head ? I am a very capable home mechanic.

I'm pretty sure mine is the Euro 4 engine MY2008/9 and wondered (hoping) if the alignment of the crank pulley was the same as the older models ?

I've never needed to remove a head but from what I've seen of the instructions, it doesn't look too bad. Just time consuming.

If I get chance, I'll check Vida but I'm pretty sure that all D5 crank pulleys orientate like my picture when the cam mark is aligned correctly.
