Volvo v50 misfiring
My volvo v50 2011 drive is misfiring. what can I check?
I'm an engineer so I should be able to do quite a bit. Given where to look. Basically my car ran fine but the start/stop never worked and is the original reason i joined this forum. I changed the battery etc but it never worked but the car ran fine so ignored it. Later the car went in to limp mode. I took it too a garage and they found the partical filter presure sensor pipes had perished and some other small issues they replaced the parts and did a force regeneration. £110. Later the car went back in to limp mode so I took it back they ran some more tests and said the DPF had failed completely blocked which is unusual for this car. So they replaced that £595. As soon as I got the car back. in there car park I let the engine warm slightly and revved the engine but it got stuck around 3000 - 3200 rpm and would just bounce around there and kicked out a rich smoke. I went straight back to the guy and he said the sensors might need time to recalibrate etc. So drove it for a week. Any ways car still struggle at 3000 rpm. Kicking out smoke and while driving I hit a flat spot which is like left foot breaking at 3000rpm in lower gears. I took the car back to the garage they had it for two days then said the internal timing chain(cam chain) sound like it's out (no cost) and is why the engine is misfiring but they do not have the tools to do it. but if they can get it, it will be about 400quid. So basically before I go down this path is there anything else it might be that I can check? would the EGU cause it? I just find it a little strange that the car ran fine then after the dpf replace it misfires. It might be why the dpf blocked but why was there no misfiring before at 3000rpm? Can it be done my self? Any advice at all or knowlege Last edited by PeteChappers; Dec 9th, 2018 at 18:56. |

These guys are volvo specialist
they seem aright of face value but now, im just feeling a bit unsure about it. So id like to rule every thing else out my self before agreeing that it is this or not. The Both the closest Volvo garages get horrific reviews near me for being rouging bastards. so im really stumped. |

the dpf system on these seems to be a Fussy thing , if they havent fitted gen volvo sensors then you ,going on all the posts on here , are going to be having issues. same applys to the DPF unit itself,
volvo specialists,, and they come out with Quote:
if not,, then its a needed thing, im not 100% sure how they come up with "the cam timings out" just doing the DPF system, as to do that, theres no Need at all to fanny with the cam belt. they dont "just all by magic" loose the timing unless the garage has messed with it. as the rpm gets to the Same point as it did before they started playing ,, then Either they were "fixing" the wrong things, havent a clue so changed things on guess work, or have fudged something up "fixing" the dpf/limp mode issue and wont say. you Can get a vida/dice clone/copy and diagnose it yourself (there are threads on the forum where people are selling them, pre tested and with help to install the software) find a Decent garage which has the volvo diagnostic gear , main dealer personal pov, ask the "garage" where the hitching rail for there horses are... "yeehhhaaaa cowboys"

That sounded like a sarcasm but if it wasnt, maybe you had better experience than I did, but very often "authorised dealership" mechanic being a 2nd year traineee has as much "experience" on working on T5 AWD as your local garage on Bugatti Chiron :P
to OP - would be good to get second opinion on that, have you tried another garage? Vida+Dice will tell you 100% of codes, thats true, would be probably cheaper for you to get a set and it will return investment for you in no time, especially if you are good with DYI.

They get 1000's of Volvo cars through the door every year , They have 5 to 10 different opinions instantly available if they get a T5 in ! Nobody has more experience in using Vida properly , They get Regular Factory training courses, They have most of the problems in their head and know exactly what to do . They have regular Daily service bulletins listing most known faults. They have all the correct volvo tools to do the tests they need to do quickly and accurately , They have instant contact with the technical help desk who will guide them through if necessary in difficult cases and send a field engineer down in exceptional cases .. They have probably over 100 years Volvo experience from their technician Team .from what I've seen . A 2nd Year trainee is going to be good ,he or She is certainly going to be able to help with your Phone/Bluetooth/ wi-Fi problems , they pick up and retain information 10 times better that you or I do ., it costs a great deal of money to run a trainee through the 3 year volvo apprentice scheme which is widely recognised as the best in the country . Things have moved on a lot since the 1980's .. No independent can hope to be in that position . although there are clever and valued ones around of course but not where we all need them . It's ok having Vida but I would think those that do are completely unaware of the other 90% of what it can actually do . Thank god we don't have to work on Ferraris and Bugatti Chirions ! It may be everyone's dream but not when you know what is involved ..
