I'm no expert, but:
I had a ABS controll unit fault on my car resently and it is likely to be the same fault on yours. You could put yourself on the list for borrowing a code reader on this furum. Or get to a garrage where they have one as if it is not the Controll unit it is no point spending £200+ fixing it..
If the fault is the controll unit it is easy to get it loose. If you are a capable electrician you could try to open it (with a hacksaw..) and solder the connections. If not I would reccomend sending it to someone to fix for you, search other threads about abs controll unit for info. You could alternatively get a refurbished unit, to exchange with your faulty one, if you do not wish to drive without ABS.

I tried to open mine and solder it, but I broke the unit during the process, so I had to get hold of a refurbished unit. The refurbished one cost £200 I think a new one is about £400.

moderators: Think It might be an idea to make a guide on this problem into a sticky? Seems to be fairly common..

i have a 97 850 with tracs as well and the light kept coming on then stayed on all the time, i had the codes read at a garage and they told me it was the rear wheel sensors, but after a bit of reading on here decided that it sounded more like the abs unit was at fault so had a go at resoldering, put it back on took it for a test drive light is now off and i have abs and tracs again. so i would say give the soldering a go but just take your time getting the thing open, i had to crack off the plastic lip that runs all the way round i weakened it with a hacksaw, then used a stanley blade to repeatedly score the rubbery seal and it opened just fine, then followed the instuctions i found on here. cost me £3 fot the little e5 female torx bit and about an hour.

These symptoms sound like the ignition selector switch going faulty.
