The mobile phone in your pocket already does that.

wow! they actually go in pockets? I thought that had to remain on the table for all to see, to have a little strap on them and hang then around your hand or neck, to mount them on your windscreen etc etc!

Hi,

Most commercial GPS devices do not transmit anything. They use the reception of multiple GPS sat signals to do their work..
Linky....

Only with tracker-like devices will the unit transmit anything.

However, with the new euro sat system, and the requirement for location info from governments, newer systems based not on GPS but Galileo (the euro sat) will be able to do this.
Linky....
Why? Because government already has decided thats what it wants.
Thus commercial developers will design/build kit to be able to do this...

If you really want to be able to track your car for cheap, then fit a mobile phone to the car, somewhere discreate and with a connection to the main battery for recharging.
Make sure there is an external antenna and have the phone hidden away in the boot somewhere.
With a pre-paid simm, the IMEI and phone number, the phone can be located anywhere..

Des. . .

Garmin GPS, at least the upper end of the market, ie c550 you have to type in a pin to use. It will only boot up at your chosen location, there fore, if its stolen, the thief will not be able to use. Inform Garmin with serial no. and it is blocked permanantly. Unit will only reboot on arrival at chosen destination.
