Default What size tire will fit my Thor 225/45/17's?

I think I have the Thor wheels...

I wouldn't mind a smaller turning circle but would I only need other tires or also other wheels/rims? (Have been advised 205/50-17 and obviously I would also have to change the stops...)

My current Eagle Vector (version 2?) Winter all season tires are bald in the back, so I need at least 2 new tires. The Eagle Vector 4's are 188€ a piece including fitting, so that would be the cheapest option if the other 2 are still OK...
(BTW, I'm in Holland, and not sure I will go to Austria this winter, and it's an AWD)

The other offer is Efficiency Grip 225/45/17 for 136 a pop.

Any thoughts welcomed, and I won't go for the P6000's...

get the 205/50's but you'll need new steering stops from IPD to get the better turning circle

Thor wheels are 7.5 x 17 inch as are some other Volvo 17" wheels. But some volvo 17" wheels are 7 x 17 inch. See http://vccs.volvocars.se/Accessories.../styling/wheel.

If you are considering mounting 205/50-17 tyres, it would be prudent to confirm that the particular tyres are approved to be mounted on 7.5" wide wheels. Volvo recommends 225/45-15 for the 17" wheels. Probably this is because they know that those who want 17" wheels want a wider tyre as well as lower profile, but using other than their recommendation is experimenting.

For example see here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=yes&tab=Specs.

So the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 in 205/50-17 is fittable on 17" wheels from 5.5" to 7.5" wide and the rim width for their measurements was 6.5". The fact that the Thor are 7.5" wide would give me a little pause. But someone with knowledge might say that these are fine on 7.5" rims.

225 45 17 are what I have fitted to the Thor Alloys the V70 is sat on, the steering lock stops do need adjustment to prevent rubbing - Get a set of lock stops from the C70 along with the rivits and you won't go far wrong - Mike

By fitting skinny tyres, you run a much greater risk of kerbing the rims, even at low speeds.

The tyre wall will be flush, or possibly inside the rim lip - not good.

I bought a cheap set of Metis 16" rims, and they are intended for 205 tyres.
There are always plenty of decent 2nd hand Volvo rims on eBay.

Guys, thanks for your very informative answers.

I kinda chickened out of experimenting and ordered 4 new Goodyear Vector's, pretty much the successor of my Eagle Vectors I think. Saves me buying a new set of rims for separate winter and summer tires... (Although I saw a set of black powdercoated Thor wheels with decent summertires that would look nice on my shabby white old police-Volvo )

(PS: I ordered them for 108.25€ excluding fitting (max. 20€ per wheel), €60 per wheel less than quoted in my first post, although there are 2 or 3 versions of the Goodyear all season winter-symbol-approved tires, and I don't know if that changes anything...)

Before:

After:

Michelin Primacy's, as after ordering the Vectors, they were suddenly not available anymore. So I'll use the (secondhand) Primacy's until the Vector's are available again.
They are powdercoated Thor's. (The normal Thor's are saved for the Vector's)

And one wheel doesn't come off... The bolts were on incredibly tight, and after finally getting them off using my 50cm long torque wrench, the rim still doesn't come off.

Had to clear out some pics in my imageshack account... But check out the rear rim. Have since fitted the eagle vectors and the black rims are in the back of the garden...
