Seized sliders on the brake calipers, seized pistons in the brake calipers themselves and/or a seized handbrake mechanism. I suffered all 3 issues on my 98 S40.
Ask her to touch the wheels after a drive and see if any are warm or hot.

As already mentioned the brakes binding, is the hand brake releasing properly? Common issue on the x40's

No smell of brakes binding. Can only wait till I get home to check over the braking system.
Thanks all for the replies |

It had MOT last time I was home (about4 weeks ago) and the brakes and emisions were fine, I know that does not mean they will be fine forever.
I will have the brakes down when I get home and start from there. I will keep you all posted. |

Update
Right folks,
Having had chance to look at it now I am home, I found the following. Both front callipers had the lower sliders seized although there was no excessive heat or smell from either. I have freed of the sliders and fitted new pads. What was interesting was that the car misfired under load which I traced back to number 4 cylinder. Further investigations suggested to me that it was the the coil pack for cylinders 1 and 4. I have fitted a new coil pack and the engine is now running "sweet" again. My daughter now confirms it is all back to normal with the fuel consumption back where it used to be. As always, thanks to all for your inputs. |
