Default Engine Rebuilt Cost

hi there folks,

was wondering if some one could help me, i'm considering doing an engine rebuilt on my 03 V40 1.9D with 207000 miles on the clock and was looking for a rough figure it would cost in parts from the guys who have already taken on this task. and any problems they hit whilst doing it.

i would be using geniune volvo parts so that i know its good to go.

many thanks lads

The engine still has another 100k to go, why are you needing to rebuild it? Might be cheaper to drop a lower mileage engine in.

i would agree with above , engine reconditioning now is going to cost a LOT of money , i doubt if your engine is actualy worn , what are the symtoms?
You really would save a lot of time and money by getting a second hand engine for a few £100 ...

The block is also a Renault 1.9D from the Megane and Laguna so it shouldn't be too hard to find one but then again I don't know which parts Volvo changed to make them so reliable, I think Biotoxic's 1.9D got to 250k miles, mines on 120k miles or there abouts and it still pulls like a train.

I wouldnt bother rebuilding it unless its either blow up or its extremely tired. 207k is nothing.

It's not worth it if you just rebuild the engine. It would make sense only if you would decide to remap after you would fit a oversized pistons, some forged or hardened valves bigger turbo and do some other custom stuff, basically an engine tune up otherwise you might end up with scrap engine after a year or so.

Not worth it. Maintain it as normal or change car.

Correct. I shudder to think what price of building a T4 from scratch would be (with a bare shell). I'm replacing screws/clips etc that over 13 years have been replaced with things that do job but are either not original or broken and the cost of these new is ludicrous... I reckon a T4 from scratch would cost in excess of £50k to build with genuine parts......

Before we all start figuring out what the cost of a rebuild vs a good used engine is, what is wrong with your engine? Just because it has started smoking or burning oil does not always mean the main block is kaput.
If you have a smoke related problem then you need to figure out if it's an injection system fault or oil leaking into the cylinders. If it's the latter then a compression check would show if the valves or rings are bad. If the problem is with the top end, then fitting a recon head might be worth doing.
For a diesel main block to fail at only 200K, the engine must have led a real tough life, like neglected oil changes, overheating or lots of time stuck in traffic combined with cheap oil causing sludge. Black death can be cured, although it is a long messy job.

I would be surprised if you have badly worn main bearings and broken rings, because a turbo is far more sensitive to oil and driver abuse than the block, so if you have not blown the turbo it is unlikely that your engine has been damaged.
