If you want to check your boost every now and then rather than have one fitted all the time and have an Android smart phone I would get one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluetooth-Di...5071479&sr=8-1 £9 and works perfectly on my T4. Use it with the torque pro app on Android for boost levels and loads of other readings/codes. IMO boost gauges look a bit tacky these days as every one with a turbo has one fitted just for the sake of it lol |

Do NOT buy an electrical boost gauge, go with a mechanical one ie one where the boost/vac directly moves the gauge, if you get an electrical one then if the earth or any part of the sensor is off it will give an incorrect reading. Look for something like a Racetech one, I have 2 spare mechanical boost gauges, one is a Blitz and one is a larger Omori (I think) although I need to check that they are correctly calibrated. Just make sure you go with a mechanically operated one.

And am i best off connecting it to the vacuum pipe or directly onto the inlet manifold? Presumably either would work?

Hmm, quite possibly. I have a phase 2 (2002) so that could maybe be the issue? I'm not sure if others on here have had any luck with an OBD2 connector on a phase 1?

Also does anybody have any experience with using bleed valves for manual boost control? Would it work better than the "turning the rod" trick?

you might have seen my post on my problematic volvo atm, the turning of the actuator rod works great but make sure your car is running good elsewhere before hand, also my vacuum pipe to the mechanical boost gauge sucked itself shut, so might be worth looking into some sweet piping too i got one off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:X:RTQ:GB:1123 and it was working good till the pipe died
