drive at a lowish speed with the parking brake on about 25% for a minute . let it cool down and do it again later , then re adjust . Use your common sense don't let it fry .

In the interest of blowing balance completely out of the water I'd average a guess of 50 percent xc90s fail on park brake. I see it everyday. Its well known in mot centres that the xc90 is the only standard vehicle you will struggle with on park brake.
An extended limo mercedes with the same type of park brake also struggles but thats because of it being extended and made heavier and a park brake expected to work harder for higher efficiency due to more weight.
The xc90 is also the only vehicle I've ever heard of that can't have good brakes without genuine parts.
If a landcruiser could double its expected efficiency on aftermarket parts for test and an xc90 has bother scraping its efficiency on the same brand then its clear that the xc90 park brake is absolutely rubbish and barely fit for purpose. Its a disgrace.

I love my XC90. In some areas it is bullet proof- such as water pumps and balljoints. I've had my 2004 model for 9 years. But I am now due to fit my 3rd set of rear dics/drums and genuine pads. It would probably be my 5th or 6th set if it wasn't for the adjusters I fitted. The adjuster seem to give me an extra year in between re builds. Last time I did the re build the MOT examiner commented how good mine was and he said he normally fails them even though he tries to pass them. I've changed both rear cables- but not the front one.
Mind you cars with a handbrake on the rear caliper are not without their own problems as the mechanisms often seize-but they're not quite as bad as the XC90- in my opinion.
There used to be a section in the gov.uk MOT website that broke down MOT failures by make and model and type of failure- I can't seem to find it now though.

I agree with everything you said and my experiences are exactly like that examiners (you try to pass them but they normally fail). Their is no other vehicle that this is the case with. And yes mot wise for everything else they are fairly good. They are a safe comfortable big bus but its annoying when volvo enthusiasts mislead other people that volvo could never have a problem. I'm neutral and will tell it as it is with any car.

I have to agree with fitting the adjusters. Mine was close to failure three mots until I fitted these three years ago. My mot history indicated a history of this and after fitting genuine shoes.

Since then with the last two mots has never been an issue .

I understand they may be non standard but they simply work.
