Default Scam Warning.

Taken from the very good retro-rides forum, news of a fraudster preying on innocent car buffs on internet forums. Sounds like hes made quite a bit of money already.

THIS IS REAL NOT A EMAIL THING DOING THE ROUNDS PLEASE MAKE IT STICKY FOR ALL TO SEE.

I use several forums and a certain person has arrived and is making a LOT of money, £1000's from us. Selling non existant parts to people on various car forums. So far I know of about 5 different ones he has used and has made a serious amount on each.

BEWARE WHEN BUYING ANYTHING ONLINE THROUGH A PRIVATE AD, HE ONLY ACCEPT PAYPAL, WONT ALLOW COLLECTION AND HOLD THE BIGGEST STORE OF SOUGHT AFTER PARTS FOR ALL MAKES APPARENTLY. Links to various forums below.

The police are not interested in this sort of thing. They regard non delivery of goods in these circumstances as breach of contract and a civil matter between the participants. Been there, asked for help and was given the elbow.

in this case its surely a case of fraudulent behaviour/obtaining funds by deception and the police should get involved.

If it was a one off, however, if there is evidence that the person is doing this on a repeaded and regular basis then yes, the police will need to investigate..

Depends very much on the Force and how they have allocated funds. Some have well provisioned Cheque & Credit Card Fraud units and some don't. It is also dependent upon the Credit Card company making a complaint to the Police. You enter into a contract with the Credit card company when you buy anything using their card, it is the responsibility of the C/Card company to reimburse you and pursue the scammer (i.e. report each instance to the police). Unfortunately such small sums are simply written off by the card issuers in a lot of cases because it isn't worth their while. Generally the Force investigating (in this case Northamptonshire) should be collecting all the evidence from other Forces (e.g. if you have complained to the Met they will simply pass the detail on and not investigate), doing the investigative work and building a case. Takes a hell of a long time though as there simply aren't enough coppers assigned to this type of low level crime. Credit card companies are being taken for staggering amounts by organised crime and this is where the resource is focussed.

I find it amazing though that people are still caught out by this sort of thing.
