Automatic Gearbox Compatibility
Posted this in the AWD section but not getting any replies so trying here.
I have a late Xc90 but am wondering if it is the same gearbox fitted to most later Volvos but with perhaps different ECU and/or fittings e.g. transfer box? Google tells me that for all uses the gearbox has same ratios and valve body looks same across the range, so am guessing should be able to use box from another model of Volvo by swapping over the original ECU plus any brackets needed. Has anyone tried using box from different model Volvo or even different make such as Saab with any success? |

Not sure on the later 6 speed TF80 units but I have done this a few times with the earlier 5 speed AW55. However I did think that whilst the ratios were the same, the final drive ratio was different on the XC90 compared to the XC70.
I believe though you must get a donor from a AWD car, you cannot retrofit a transfer box to a gearbox from a 2WD car without swapping the casing and some internals. Not sure on the ECU either as on the earlier boxes its separate.

Thanks for the reply Tannaton - did some more digging and you are correct that the final drive ratios are different so not directly interchangeable between models, bugger!
