Default Corroded exhaust manifold studs

I have an exhaust leak around the manifold, (gasket between head and manifold crumbling). The trouble is some of the studs and nuts are terribly corroded. I have bought a new set of studs, washers and nuts from Volvo as well as new gaskets. I think I will be able to remove what remains of the nuts and thus take off the manifold but what concerns me is removing the studs from the head. I have seen stud removers that grip the stud in conjunction with a socket set but has anyone used these and if so are there any tips to pass on ? My fear is that I will shear off the stud flush with the head.
Any advice please ?

Is this the time for a good supply of the magical WD40 or similar?

After a good soaking, try a sharp rap with a hammer (downwards, not sideways) and then use two nuts to lock on the stud prior to turning it out.

If one shears off, you can use one of the others (or a new one) to guage a drilling depth. Drill out the centre of the broken stud and then then tap in an old screwdriver blade to assist in turning the stud loose. I have taken out broken bolts/studs in the past in this way.

I have bought these from Frost http://www.frost.co.uk/acatalog/Inde..._Offers_5.html. Used them for exhaust studs, works fine. Buy some Plus Gas Dismantling Spray too.
