The 242 DL is substaintially less exiting than the 262 Bertone Coupe but not necessarily a worse car. In many ways better as it is a lot simpler and more straight forward to work on. As a US car, it could have a few more extras than common on European cars such as power steering and leather but it is not certain, you will probably find this car a very basic car, but none the less quite fun. I suspect it will be a B21F engine but again, could not say for sure.

the car is very basic-no electric windows, the only extra is air con,no leather,i havent seen it yet but i will see it on sunday,i am going to fit power steering, alloys and leather seats, are the seats the same as 240 seats and will the back seat fit the 242,i know where there is a 265 estate for spares and i can get the alloys and leather plus a few spares for my 240 GL estate also,i havent a clue what the engine is but i know its 4 cylinder,i presume the B21F is 2.1 non turbo,my 240 is a B200E,if anybody has anymore info or knows where i can find info please reply - thanks again george

Seats from a 244/264 or 245/265 will not fit as you need thee flip mechanism to get into the rear seat, but finding leather seats for a 242 is going to be difficult, me thinks, over here. In the states, they are plenty full. One way of doing it would be to use the leather of a 244/264 and fit that onto your frames. A lot of work, maybe, but not impossible. The B21F has the following data (1979):

Fuel injected in-line four, cast iron block with light alloy head, OOverhead camshaft, Lambda Sond emission control. Volume 2127cc, Compression 9.3:1, 107 SAE at 5250 rpm, Torque 114 at 2500.

Your car will have either M45 (4-speed) box or M46 (4+OD) or the three speed automatic. I have the drive ratios for these boxes.

ya i was thinking of that too,in ireland volvo 760's are very popular free of very cheap for parts and i could get the seats from that,i can get alloys too,one of my first projects is to fit power steering-i already have the pump and i think my freind has a power steering rack from a 240 we scrapped 2 years ago.do you know of any difficulties there,i found a register of classic volvos on http://www.volvocars.ie and they said that the 242s had either 1986 or 2127cc and had 97 and 133bhp respectively,is there a turbo version or something,my car is auto, will the front seats fit the 242 from a 2 series volvo, they seem to be the same height as the 240 from a picture i have - higher roofline than the 262,i have 240 eletric windows for it with all switches etc i cant imagine any problems fiting them, are all 242's left hand drive?
thanks
ben

Ben,
The 700 seats, as far as I know, are too wide to fit in a 200 series and the mounting is different.
Also if your car is LHD you will have to find a 200 series LHD steering rack which could be a problem.
The pump should fit OK to LHD or RHD.
Colin.

This is the third time I post this so I hope it works. You will need a LHD steering rack as this is going to be a LHD car, being US spec. What year is it, as my books show that at least on a 1979, an auto DL should have power steering. 760 will not fit, the fittings could be modified but you'd still end up with seats that will not flip to get into the rear seat. You might try 780 seats but they will be costly. Get seats from a 244, they will be cheap, and fit replace the leather. Takes a day or so, a lot of patience but then you can have a pint and say: "I did that!".

There was a turbo version of the B21F called the B21FT in the states, unsure if this was sold in Europe. 133 bhp does sound a tad too high but is possible, sounds more like the B21FT however, the B21F should be more like 113.

Hi
ive collected the car its got power steering, gorgeous if you're a volvo lover, its 2314cc,loads of documents incl. original warranty and
shipping documents,i need manifold gaskets and the engine is very fumey as it was parked up for a while, does anyone know where i can get reasonably priced mail order gaskets and small bits any where, its got 120k miles believed to be genuine, ill keep a look out for a 244 with leather and alloys for parts as im not in a major hurry for the seats and alloys, drives perfect but the brakes are very bad despite new pads in the front-not biting properly,oh and an appearingly good battery keeps going flat,it turned over a 2.5 850 after sitting but keeps going flat,i think i took advantage of my very powerful 240 2.0 estate by towing a 242 and trailer 130 miles on not the best of roads yesterday - only a volvo would do it,any more info?
thanks

Well, seeing as it is a high spec car with the two hard-to-install options (AC/PAS) already there, in due course install electric windows (dead easy), electric mirrors (quite easy) and central locking (dead easy). The 240 also had the option of remote boot opening (look on e-Bay for hardware) and then get leather and alloys and a nice stereo and you'll have a darn nice car. Take your time and buy the parts from scrappers and e-Bay and it won't cost much.
