The hard plastic floor mats often found in 700 and 900 series cars

I think the intention was that the lip on them prevented your carpets from getting soaked by snow-covered boots.

Just to make things a little clearer (thanks for the description Jim!) these are the Snow Trays in question :

Purely for comparison, here is a set of Snow Trays for a 760 (may fit 960 as well) showing the difference on the drivers one but also showing why i didn't buy them!

The things that go over the air intake vents for the heater on the bonnet are called Snow Caps, they stop the snow getting into the heater system.

Just to add to the 'discussion'. Volvo describe them in the 1990 Accessories Brochure under 'Practical & Style' Item 13 as ' Floortrays'. "No matter what you and your passengers have underfoot, these tailor-fit, easy to wash trays keep it off the carpet."

We just call them Winter Floor Mats

And they work extremely well.
My daughter emptied a bottle of water on to them the day I bought them!!!
And the underlying carpet stayed bone dry.
