Default Locking nut success!

Might be helpful to others should they be in the same situation as I was: I had two locking nuts stuck on my v50, one had a shattered center and the other just wouldn't budge (i was too scared to push this one hard after breaking the first!). The nuts are the flower type with the rotating outer bezel that came with my 07 v50.

Phoned around and there's lots of sighing when I mention it was a Volvo, then talk of welding. After this (and i'm not sure why I didn't do this first) I searched on here and I hear about a system called dynomec, although there was some doubt as to whether they would work with nuts with the rotating bezel.

Anyway, today I was due to be in Sheffield which isn't too far from their office so they said to come by and give it a try. It was a successful visit! The first nut was completely shattered by the tool (a first apparently), we were then able to pick all the bits out so that was sorted. The second nut came off straight away no fuss! So £20 in total to get rid of the two locking nuts without any damage to my wheels.

Needless to say I've replaced them with standard nuts, I'm not sure there's so much of a need for locking nuts these days.... If I do get some they'll be a fair bit better quality then that which came with my car!!!!

So to sum up, if you've stuck/broken locking nuts that have the rotating outer bezel that seem to cause lots of garages to use words like welding the Dynomec system might work for you

Note; I don't work for Dynomec! I'm just very pleased at their solution that came at a reasonable cost + excellent service.

When I did the rear brakes on my V40 last year I found the locking nuts were a real pain to get off. I removed all four and put the normal nuts on. Like you say wheel theft is not such a big deal these days, especially with OEM wheels.

With every car I have owned if they have LWN's i always change them for standard nuts, I was suggest to customers that they do the same unless the wheels are really fancy.
The days of alloys being stolen are in general long gone as nearly all cars not wear them as standard.

Yep mine are just the standard Volvo 17s. I'd be pretty annoyed if they got pinched but I'd don't think the likely hood of that happening is great. Far more chance of me getting a puncture in the middle of nowhere, no mobile reception and a broken nut.

Many thanks for sharing.
I have lost my locking key for the nuts and i am stuck with 3 of the nuts on the wheels.
I need to use this service as soon as possible as you never know when puncture strikes and i will be stuck on the side of the road looking like a idiot cause i cannot change my won wheel.

So is about £10 a wheel?

Yes £10 per wheel/nut that needs to be removed.

Many thanks for this thread.
Any idea how much the kits cost. Wouldn't be a bad thing to have in the tool collection

It's certainly not cheap, in the region of £150 I think.

Maybe worth a punt I think. No one in this area seems to offer this service. ( not that I intend to set up a business )
But the chap at the tyre place who " attempted " to take my locking nuts off said this was a very regular problem and to take my car to the local cowboy who will weld a bolt on.... you know the story.
