'89 vs. '90 B230FT & Piston Slap
Gents,
I read the 1990 press kit, and it talks about the genereation 3 turbo engine coming out for that year. Do we know when that change really came into production? Other than the smaller turbo turbine and lower rpm cut in, what differences are there vs. the Gen 2? 2nd question, what mileage are you all seeing piston wear severe enough to cause piston slap? Anyone done new rings and/or pistons w/o rebuilding the bottom end? (not that I would, just asking.) As always, thanks for the thoughts and advice. |

The 3rd gen or late 89 onwards engines had 13mm rods over 9mm in the 2nd gen engines which is the main difference as far as I know though there may be others.
As for high mileage engines, if treated right, i would not expect to get piston slap until 250k+ and even that may be too early.

These engines can get piston slap at any time , it happens if you are ever unlucky enough to overheat the engine , Its usualy piston 4 which distrorts and sufffers but never detremental .

Mine`s on 366k.
I thought I was getting a bit of slap, a ticking noise on start up, however since the last oil change it seems to have resolved. Just before I had the HG done the bottom end seemed a bit rattly but that also resolved. These motors are bloody strong!! I very rarely thrash mine, keeping it around or below 2500rpm most of the time. |
